Here we go again...

After two failed attempts in 2010 and again in 2015 and a successful "third time lucky" in 2021 I'm going again with a plan in mind as that seems to work better for me. The '21 attempt was all shot on film and I think it was this constraint that pushed me to finish it.

This time around it's all about the 28mm field of view. I'm mainly a 28/35/50 person with 100mm for portrtaits, so I have a few 28mm lenses to try out on various cameras. Should be fun and I'm hoping they won't all have the same look. Fingers crossed!

Week 1: Close to Home. GR3 1/30sec handheld which I'm not used to being able to do.

A SOOC also. I do enjoy low light pictures and find they need very little tweaking. Close to home in my office with Bill Kerman a long way from home on the moon. My toast to a bit of humour in the interpretation. Taking pictures around the house can seem really boring at the time, but I find that many years later they are suddenly really interesting.

Surely that’s the Mun!

Im a fan of the same game although is that KSP 2? I’ve not had chance to play that one yet, I’m still playing the first one.

You have a nice set up there and the colours are very intriguing. The pink camera sets the scene really nicely.

A nice interesting take on the theme Ian :)

Something a bit different Ian - I like it.
Good luck with the 28mm 52. Looking forward to seeing how it evolves.

Nice bit of messing with the theme!

I wish you luck with the 28mm challenge within a challenge - I briefly considered it, but doubted the constraint would do anything for me other than doom my 52.

It is number 2. Far far easier to play than the 1st one with burn timers, and an SAS you can point to things like prograde, retrograde and manoever nodes. Fairly certain I had to rely on mechjeb for all that in KSP1. Still a bit buggy, but a peaceful game (mostly!) Wife bought me the neon camera as a Christmas present a few years ago and I really like it. It does give the room a nice ambiance!

Cool start to the challenge! Looking forward to seeing more 28mm!

Thanks for the comments all. I don't think it will be too much of a challenge to stick to 28mm. I can do the whole thing on my GR3 if necessary which is a super versatile camera.
Of course... I say that now...

Very clever take on the theme. My shoehorn mastery may be challenged this year ;)
I like the idea of doing the challenge at a specific focal length.
Yes. The idea was sound... How it will work in practise is another matter!
Great shot and lovely colours considering the SOOC
It's one of the things I love about the GR3. Files out of it look great with no processing. This was shot as raw but I didn't make any adjustments when I exported as jpeg.
Yes, that's a really nice shot to start the 52.
Thanks Simon.

Interesting shot and well done as an SooC. I have no idea about gaming so some of this goes right over my head

Bit of a busy week, most of which has been spent thinking about this damn theme. It was a... oh wait...

R0000450.jpg

Hard back books, on a subject I constantly find quite hard to do to my own satisfaction. In some ways, these books can be quite depressing to realise I'm so far from where I want to be, but in other ways they can be inspirational.

Struggled a bit with framing and distortion on the 28mm, and with hindsight realise I need to give a bit more round the edges to allow the software some room to correct it. Choosing very straight books was probably not the best of ideas. This is the second photo I took, then I pulled out all the spines to make them level and not cast shadows only to crop so tight it looks terrible when straightened. How can something so simple be so... oh dear... Another lesson learned...

This was the first one I took but there are less hardback books in it and at f/2.8 California Trip was the only spine in focus.

I managed zero comments this week, but will endeavour to do better if Cobra can give us an easy theme. Please.

It works well for the theme Ian and I like the tight composition and colour in the shot you've chosen.

Nothing’s wasted if you learn from it.

In hindsight maybe you’d have been better off being further back with a longer lens for less straightening. Or as you say, a lot wider.

All that said, if you hadn’t said anything I wouldn’t have thought anything was ‘wrong’ with your pic.

I really like the close-up framing and that it works on two counts. Although I missed the fact they were all hard backs, I jwas just with you that photography is hard.

I too missed the hard back reference and just thought about photography being quite hard at times. From left to right you "Begin with Bailey" and then end with Bailey's Trouble and Strife. Neat.

I like your chosen image and original take on the theme. I too had missed the hard-back link, but took it to be a reference to our chosen hobby (which certainly works in my case).

It is said that we learn more from our mistakes - but that only applies if mixed with reflection. You certainly have applied that, well done.

Don't worry about the comments, there are only so many hours in the day.

Nice shot - I'm not a big fan of photography books - I have less than ten with half being bough for me by well meaning relatives. I do have a signed copy of the Martin Parr book though :)

Thanks Pete. Stuck with the 28mm lens although I'm not sure I would have done it with a different lens, just a different composition.

Thanks Kell. True words at the top there! And self-criticism can be crippling at times.

Cheers Paul. Overthinking is a defect of mine and I wonder how true it is of other [serious amateur] photographers. Thanks for the encouragement though.

Your chosen shot is good with me. The shadows help create some interest.
Thanks Helen.

Congrats on the signed book! It's a horses for courses thing I think. I've been re-reading a Hipgnosis book my wife bought me for Christmas which alternates between inspiring and depressing. Those guys were pretty damn clever. I think the books teach me more about the art of photography more than anything else. Learning is hard though :)

end with Bailey's Trouble and Strife
Oh, and to add, this book is brilliant. I do like Bailey's work, even though those of us that remember the Olympus ads may consider him a sell out :) This has inspired a lot of creative work with my wife [unshareable!]

#1 for me as well. Prefer the contrast between the colours and colours much more punchy, like the dark space at both ends and it looks tidy. :)
