Ian's 52 for 2021

Week 40: Architecture
000014930022.jpg

Not really my pigeon hole this one, but this time of year I tend to break out the colour film. There's a bit of a delay in the processing making it tricky to turn things around in 7 days. I did like this bank building, but the Canon 28mm has a fair problem with the verticals - even after Lightroom. It's expired Kodak Pro100 and in my hunt for a nice looking colour film, I'm thinking it's not great for neutral looking images... However....

Week 41: Red
000014940035.jpg
Went to a wedding and took some photos on film. This was "easy mode" on the beer-proof £20 Canon EOS 300v with the 50mm f/1.8 and a pop up flash. This is the essence of photography for me; capturing people at their finest and creating memories.

Bonus nice photo of the bride which has been blurred down by the forum, isn't red, and isn't architecture but I was really happy with it and it made a nice print...

Nice catch up. I like the inclusion of the polaroid.. takes me back years to see that format.

Nice shots...
"This is the essence of photography for me; capturing people at their finest and creating memories."
Couldn't agree more...

Architecture is on theme. Might be a rare things soon, a high street bank! The colours look quite warm to me, which I think is pleasing.

Red made me giggle, and hopefully so will she :) and a lovely capture of the bride.

Good catch up. The Bank shot shows a classic high street bank and the Red image is a great, fun shot.

Yet another catchup....

Getting to the point where I'll be glad when it's over... I've been kicking around the forums for a while and failed this in 2010 and 2015 and am determined to make this 3rd time lucky.... However it's been a real challenge thinking up subjects for some of the theme(s) and also a struggle keeping up with comments. One thing I've found is that to give meaningful feedback to so many entries is really tough and it's often *that* which becomes more of a trial than just taking photos.

Shoehorn city this week...

Week 42: Irregular
2021-10-31-trixat800-mp-10.jpg

I really struggled with this one. My wife made me an apple custard tart thing at the weekend, and it was a bit of a nightmare to portion it out with the crust breaking off and the apple bits not wanting to be cut through. So instead of her usual fine craftsmanship, she was less happy with this and after putting most of it in the freezer, I realised that it would have made a good "Irregular" subject. Rather than dig it out though, I just took a single picture of the one slice I'd allocated myself. Jolly nice though :)

The main limitation here was using a rangefinder as this is at the close focus distance. It really needed to be a closer shot as it doesn't really hit the theme as it stands, but it's what I've got so hey ho.

Week 43: Halloween
2021-10-31-trixat800-mp-01.jpg
Another shoehorn... Not really much going on where I am for Halloween. I wonder whether everyone is fed up with it... And with the foul weather last night, we had absolutely zero visits. However on a whim, Mrs H decided to get her cloak on and go to see our neighbours little girl with some treats. I thought a portrait would be really nice.

Sadly, Mrs H didn't really want a photo doing, so I had to grab it quick and the backlighting has done the classic rookie thing of under-exposing the subject. The black cloak didn't really help the meter, so rather than kick myself over the face-in-shadow, I have decided to embrace it as part of the spooky theme...

So that's my excuses done! I'm covering my boss this week, so that will allow even less time for photos. Less than ten weeks to go though, so I'm almost there....

One good shoe horn, and one not shoehorned at all.

I think the darker exposure works well for the Halloween one.

Well done for sticking with it... we can do it!

It works and its a good portrait, so as long as you are happy with it that's all that matters. Keep going and hang in there =- It's strange to think we have less than 10 weeks left!

Irregular apple pie, was it made with shoe pastry as well :D :D

I like the Mrs H shot, the exposure suits the theme.

Pete

The pastry maybe a bit of a shoehorn but it still works with the explanation, the Halloween shot wit’s the under exposure has worked to your advantage.

I think Boots is right, the under-exposed body and face gives it a menace it would otherwise not have had and that right hand is something else.

Two boxes ticked and closer to the end game. I know where you're coming from, especially regarding the comments, but it's not compulsory and some weeks I find more time / enthusiasm to comment then others. The 52 shouldn't be a chore but occasionally it feels that way for me too... but then I think that I probably wouldn't go out with the camera if I didn't have to find a shot for this. A bit if a kick up the posterior often helps ;)

Week 44: Underneath

I enjoyed this one and ended up with quite a few images. This one I liked the most...

2021-11-07-maco-300v-29.jpg

Mrs H wanted new lampshades and typically the whole assembly needed replacing, so after spending a couple of hours on Saturday morning, I thought it was worth sharing the results!

Yep that does the job nicely :)

Good job and fits the theme nicely, good use of negative space too.

Nice shot and well exposed. Had to do a double take before I realised what it was, and as @Bebop says my first instinct was a spirograph!
More importantly, was Mrs H happy with the result?

Nice simple shot and really well exposed which must have been quite tricky

An interesting lightshade and difficult exposure, I take it your ceiling is white?

Pete

Yep. Ceiling is white. I cheated a bit as I used Diafine which is a compensating developer. What that means is that it will auto-correct any exposure errors. It's handy if you want to shoot different ISOs on the same roll of film, or develop films with different dev times in the same tank. Ultimately, it's very very difficult to get a bad exposure with it, but the downside is that you can't control exposure with development.

The image was taken on IR surveillance film which has no development times online. Rather than faff about testing, I just develop it in Diafine and it doesn't matter.

Nice shot and well exposed. Had to do a double take before I realised what it was, and as @Bebop says my first instinct was a spirograph!

Yep, she was. And that's what was important!

Thanks for taking the time to comment everyone. Much appreciated.

Week 45 & 46 incoming... Both on the same film. I shot the portraits then saved the rest for this week's theme.

First up - a big thankyou to all who have commented over this 52 for me. I've been pretty tardy in getting comments and feedback out so to get any comments on this thread is very much appreciated.

Week 45: Snappers Choice. Mrs H.
2021-11-22-645n-hp5at800-01.jpg
Mrs H had her hair done last week, so along with a bunch of digital images, I took the opportunity to get a few on film. Downside is shooting in window light... 150mm, f/2.8 and 1/45sec don't really go well together and the big lesson here is to pay attention to the shutter speed! There wouldn't have been much I could do, as 2.8 was the lowest I had, but at least I could have tried something different and less traditional. Forum compression has made the blur even worse. Still it's a good likeness and while it won't win any posing awards, it'll sit nicely in the 52 book which is ending up being what looks like a kind of social documentary project.

Week 46: Back (Of)
2021-11-22-645n-hp5at800-10.jpg
In keeping with the social documentary theme I present the back of my garage door. Onto which is pinned an A3 collage I made a few years ago when I dropped a knife on my foot severing the tendons. I was in a bit of a mess when it happened, and being a full time carer for my wife, made life a whole lot harder than it needed to be - hence the reminder! The new bird table I built a couple of weeks ago is in the background which will date it nicely and provide a double reminder in the future.

Untidy composition again, and I tried a few different angles which worked less well.

No comments necessary folks. Just trying to make it to the end!!

Well done for keeping going, when the going gets tough!

Lovely portrait of Mrs H. She must have sat nice and still for you :)

I thought it was your back garden as a subject. Looks nice and sunny. That sounds like a very nasty accident and really not what you want when you are a carer..

Snappers:

Mrs, H is a handsome woman and takes a good photograph.

Back (of):

Your grass needs cutting :)

A lovely portrait of your better half
I can never get my wife or my daughter to agree to pose for a portrait photo, especially if it’s going to get posted online!!!!!

I've enjoyed your struggle Ian, your pictures are always quite personal to you, a little glimpse into your life as it where.

Also doing the 52 on film is an achievement in itself.

Good stuff Ian - and impressive for 1/45" at 150mm!

Yeah... well... about that... Let's not tell anyone :)

I've enjoyed your struggle Ian
This made me lol Allan. I'm glad someone has!

impressive for 1/45" at 150mm!
The Pentax 150mm f/2.8 is a beautiful portrait lens and it's a real rookie mistake trying to shoot it at too low a speed. Just need to get it right with people instead of cats!2020-05-16-hp5plus-645n-11.jpg

Great portrait, really well done on that, and the garage door is a good 'catch up', fits the theme.

I love the enigmatic side-eye look in the portrait, and the way the hard shadow frames 'back of'.

That's a lovely portrait.
Nice idea for this week's theme and well done on keeping going. Almost there...

Great pictures, I think you’ve captured the light really well on both. I did winch at your knife vs tendons story though!

Week 47: Culture

2021-11-27-minitec-hp5-20.jpg

The culture of the mobile phone and the culture of the party. :)
I took my little pocket Yashica out with me and the flash was massively overpowering. Still... it's all about the moments in these instances.

Nicely done Ian :)

Nice social commentary shot. Great expressions, and I really like the perspective, with the huge bottle and glasses.
