The firebrand of Unionist Politics in Ireland has died.
I met him once at Heathrow, he was once out of the public light a really nice guy, really likable. Having only ever seen him on TV before usually shouting at the Nationalists, I was really surprised.

Many may not have agreed with his politics, but at least he stood his ground and stuck to what he believed. Much like Tony Benn and Dennis Skinner.

A rare trait amongst many in the current political arena.

I grew up in northern Ireland during the troubles.....he was a familiar face in the street. Love him or loathe him he played a major part in shaping history. He once at an early meeting with Bertie Ahern at the Irish embassy in London, Paisley requested breakfast and asked for boiled eggs; when Ahern asked him why he had wanted boiled eggs, Paisley quipped "it would be hard for you to poison them". Lol

The only thing I have never understood is just how he managed to avoid being bumped off by the other lot all this time

Paul

Simple, if the other lot had bumped him off, then his lot would have bumped one of them off.

That never stopped them before.
I doubt that logic would apply to their thinking.

Also how politically correct is referring to two groups of people killing and blowing children and buildings up for decades as "Troubles" it was verging on all out War.
Troubles is the accepted term for the conflict in NI.

Never met him personally but my overriding memory is of him spouting bile and hatred on TV.

Yep Steve, that had been my experience of him too. So it was with some horror, as his official car hadn't turned up for some reason, I got told to drive him to a house he had in London.
However, he couldn't be more different, he was polite, talkative, interesting engaging and rational in everything he said.
Ok, he possibly didn't know my family is originally from Cork and we all Catholics and I didn't feel the need to mention that.

It's good to have an anecdote like this as we too often (and naturally) judge people by their 'persona' as projected by the media rather than knowing what they are really like in person.

On the news last night they told exactly that sort of anecdote about him.

Its interesting and I think says a lot about him that for everything he said he appeared to work well and become friends with Martin Mcguinness. That to me appears to be a very pragmatic man who went a long way for NI in the end
