i7 Fan

Hi All.

The fan on my i7 processor 860 860GHz has recently started slowing down and then speeding up, to a rhythm. It’s in a Dell Studio xps PC. I’m worried it will fail and the processor will fry.

My office is +30C most of the year. I don’t play games, mostly Photoshop.

Can anybody recommend a reliable and quite fan please?

Graham.

Also make sure all the veins on the heatsink are dust free.

The fan might be speeding up and slowing down because its worn out but it might also be as the processor heats up and cools down as most now do that, to keep noise down.

If you need a quiet fan go over to overclockers dot com I am sure you will find loads of reviews of quiet replacement fans on there.

The Dell Studio XPS being a laptop? If so, you will have limited options on replacing cooling fans.
If it is a laptop it's probably worth stripping it down and blowing the dust out of it with a can of compressed air. When you have it stripped down, just be careful of any loosely fitted components are safely removed before letting rip with the air duster. You will no doubt find videos on YouTube telling you how to strip the laptop down.

Go careful when you do fit a new fan. Make absolutely sure there is a good layer of heat dissipating cream on top of the heatsink.

I have a i5 in a pc tower, & not so long ago I installed a new component & didn't realise I had inadvertently snagged a thin cable around a fan blade of the cpu.
However, after four days of use & wondering what my newly acquired (slight) noise was I took a look & discovered the aforementioned.
I unhooked said snagged cable & the fan spun as normal & silently.
So, I had been using a non cooled cpu over four days with approx 5 hours use each day with no (apparent) ill effect.
As to whether I was really lucky or other i3-5-7's series chips would be as resilient is up for debate.

There should be a cut out on the Mainboard that detects any CPU overheating and switches the computer off, so I think you must have been lucky.

Mine used to switch off randomly and usually halfway through a very long video build, loosing everything.

System Monitoring software soon showed the problem was an over heating processor. Which was when I found all the veins on the heat-sink were clogged with dust, a quick blast with an airline and all returned to normal.

The Arctic Freezer series are great value considering the performance. One thing of note is that these heatsinks may not fit in your case.

Many thanks to you all for your input.

Retrosi, If only we all had your luck.

The Grew, I did order a Artic Freezer from Amazon although I was unsure it would fit without removing a stick of ram. When the sale was complete they instantly offered an alternative. I cancel the order and ordered the alternative. I am more confident it will fit.

Thanks all for your help and advice.

Graham.

I don't know the i7 processors but unless things have changed your cpu would not fry if it overheated. The machine would just shut down to protect itself.

BTW your office is at 30C! Is that healthy?

I'm surprised people's heatsinks get so clogged up. This is the problem with off the shelf, big manufacture PCs... they're built to a price usually. Cases have incorrect airflow, and usually no, or at best, little filtration. I don't think I've ever actually cleaned the inside of my PC... still looks pretty much like it did when I built it. However.... after 2 weeks, the front intake on my PC looks like this.... but that's because it's doing it's job.. keeping the crap out.

LOL

It unclips... and is washable under the shower though... so... 1 minute later....

Just make sure you regularly blow out the heatsink with compressed air once in a while if you have a case that allows a build up of crap inside.

I find a garden leaf blower works really well at getting the dust out. I have a cooler master case with small particle dust filters that also get washed.
