I witnessed two guys shoplifting today!!.

I was waiting at the checkout in a dvd/cd shop the other day, a bloke walked out of the shop triggering the scanner alarm, the girl behind the desk called out to him, but he ignored her and walked off. She shrugged her shoulders and went back to serving the customer.

I was once informed that they actually did not mind folk reading the magazines as the main thing is to get bodies in the shop itself who hopefully will buy something if not a magazine before leaving the shop. That is why shops, especially supermarkets, have "loss leaders" just to get bodies in the premises.
Anyway magazines are on sale or return at W.H.Smiths.

There are times when it's hard to get to the magazine you're after because of all the library users - mainly people who are wasting time while waiting for someone else or who are waiting for the rain to stop! Then there are the students (usually music students) who sit down in the aisles and devour Kerrang/MelodyMaker/NME/Guitar Hero...

id have left them to it. not eworth the risk, and u wouldnt get any reward

Thank god we are finally going to hear the last of pigeons being mentioned:D

Yep, to be replaced with shop lifting a copy of bird fanciers monthly magazine from W H Smiths. hehe

btw, you never did say what the magazine was. Would you like to enlighten us or was it top shelf stuff?

I was in Sainsbury's in Manchester Piccadilly station a few weeks ago, two chavs had gotten 2 cans of beer from a 4 pack at the far isle, than walked round to the queue (there is one queue for all the tills, which often stretches back into the crisp and sweet isle..how much I hate that!), anyway, they were in front of me and I watched them stuff the cans up their tops and walk out! They even gave me a smile as they did it

Oh Matt, I should have added that info, well, on discussing what to do, I certainly did take it back, Mrs Galaxy insisted. :D

But it demonstrates how easily I could have found myself in a very tricky situation, with not a great excuse to avoid being charged with shoplifting:eek:

I think that it comes back to intent. Did you intend to deprive the shop of the item? Did you subsequently make an offer to pay or return the item? Did you have a knife/gun or other weapon that you were prepared to use to deprive the owner of the property?

We have the right to live in a community without fear of theft of violence. Despite the prices the prices Sainsburys charge at times, even they are entitled to this basic right.

At no point did I suggest that the scroat be deprived of his fingers (certainly not on the first offense anyway) - the punishment needs to fit the crime. I guess the questions are - what is proportional? What should an effective deterant look like? It would appear that an ASBO may not meet this criteria.

Just my 2p worth!

Chris

personally i think a suitable punishment is for their eyes to be clawed out by pigeons :D

I was in a tie rack, when I noticed a fella sticking boxer shorts in his bag so I told the cashier and he scarpered. He followed me and gobbed on my suit. At least green gob was easier to scrape off then pigeon poo

i walked out with a nuts magazine about 2 years ago in front of security cameras and everything quite by accident, id out all my coursework on top so i could carry beer. and then about 6 months later i bought playboy and nuts, but the guy only charged me for the nuts. he thought it was one mag and i didnt realise till i got to my flat and worked it out on my calculator... (i can only do very basic 11+ maths)

Theft is theft in any normal persons view, whether it be two cans of coke or a car.As for shop lifting the cost of the coke would have been about £1.20 ish.The cost of calling the police and prosecuting would have been about £400 pounds, just to see them given an order to paint railings for two weekends. If you see a thief it is far better to just observe out of harms way and note as much as possible then give the information to security or in some cases now the resident police patrols. A live person with information is imeasurably more important than a dead hero.

A few years ago whilst driving in to M/C through Openshaw we saw a couple of lads standing suspiciously near an old lady at a bus stop , I knew what was going to happen and they grabbed her handbag and she fell to the floor .
Me and my work collegue followed them at a distance and they disapeared behind a school , we quietly approached and the two lads were knelt on the floor going through the contents of the handbag .
Well they got the shock of their lives , one resisted and got thumped , the other didn"t , our mate left in the car saw to the old lady and called the police who knew them as local thiefs when they arrived .
We were called to court some months later but they pleaded guilty and were sent to prison .
If I had been by myself I prob would have stopped with the lady initially .
