Yes
very nearly ran out of diesel just now , the car had just gone onto 0 miles remaining as i was on the way for fuel and it started stuttering , fortunately i got there , too close for comfort for me :bang:

It was showing 0 miles worth of fuel left and you're suprised it started stuttering?

Surely 0 means "no fuel left"?

"i will never trust a car tripmeter again !!!! "

Actually it sounds to me like it's VERY trustworthy...
At least you know that in that car when it says it has no fuel it really means it!

the fuel guage on my mini is very accurate.... it reads half a tank when its full, empty when its half full...... oh and it doesnt have an accurate speedo or odometer to allow me to work it out, its more a guessing game than anything else :)

British engineering at it's best

Most manufacturers refer to them as being a fuel level indicator......it's just an indication not an accurate reading.

you did very well tbh, i've looked at countless cars that have cut out above the red :D

Why would you let it get so low in the first place:shrug:

i always do if i know i am only a mile or so from the garage , what gotme was i have done it before and never had a problem , so i thought , i will be ok !!!!! , nearly wasnt , that first hiccup was nearly heartstopping  , deffo learnt my lesson for sure

When I bought my current car, I test drove it and the trip computer said 0 miles. I drove it around 5 miles. Then when I went to pick it up a day later it still had zero miles left. Had at least another 5 mile drive before I found a petrol station.
I always refill my car when the trip computer reads 50 to go, maybe 40 at the lowest.
I ran out in my previous car, but that didn't have a trip computer. Fortunately there was a petrol station right in front of us and I coasted right up to the pump. Failing that, I'd have made the wife push.

Ah! Not the tripmeter then.

I've found the miles-to-go warning on my mini to be very accurate. Whereas I have driven 14 miles below zero on the lexus.

Funny you should mention that, the Fiesta I had as a courtesy car would go right down to 10 miles, but when you put, say, a tenners's worth in it would only register 11 miles, until it had been switched off and left for a while

i sometimes find that my focus will show the fuel light when i set off in the morning (as i live on a slope) i can drive all the way to work, get in the car and start the engine again and the light doesnt come on until i get to the same slope when i get home. i presume that once the light comes on, it stays on until the engine is restarted.

Did anyone see the Top Gear when they had to drive from Switzerland or somewhere, to Blackpool on 1 tank of fuel.

Clarkson chose a Jag and when it eventually read '0' miles to go, he carried on for about 30 miles and made it there. Not only that but when they drained the tank, they found enough fuel left in it to do another 130 miles !!

I ran out of fuel once. Decided I would see how far I can go on the red. Not very, would be the answer.

When I was your age we used alway be running out of petrol, fortunately it's pretty much down hill for the mile or so to the nearest petrol station, so if needed we could push it a bit and then jump in and freewheel right down the main street. If it was timed right and the lights were with you it was possible to make it all the way up to the pumps.

I ran out in the pouring rain about a mile from a petrol station :bonk: Luckily my mate was filling up when I got there ! ! !

What I like best about my trip computer is when I fill it up it always shows 459 miles to go. Then with steady driving it starts going up instead of down. I usually get around 500 miles to a tank in warm weather, with 50 miles to go when I fill up again.

My car isnt posh enough to have a trip computer, but it does have a little orange light that comes on when your about to run out.

Its when this light comes on, that I look for a petrol station and put some fuel in.

Sometimes its took 20-25 miles before I've found one, I dont know how many miles you can get when the light comes on.

Assuming your Mondeo sender unit is working roughly the same as Mondeo, my orange light comes on around the same time as the trip computer says 50 to go.
