Yes
I want these three types of lens' but unsure on the overall cost of them so I was just wondering what is a good lens for each of the threee catorgrays and how much will it cost!!

Thanks
Matt

24-105 is a stunning walkaround; maybe the 17-40 if you're a landscaper aswell. 18-200's are hellish useful in the camera bag...

portrait? macro? Maybe kill two birds with one stone and pick up the Tamron 90mm f/2.8?

Get a 50mm f/1.8 for a general/portrait lens and use your cokin set up for "macro". Problem solved

Unless you have shed loads on money the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro is the best out there IMHO, but if you are a bit flush with cash Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 L USM Macro Lens

interesting
do you have the kit lens? on a budget the 18-55 IS isn't a bad lens apparently.

walkabout though, 18-55 sigma or 17-50 f2.8 tamron
the nifty 50mm 1.8 is a corker but if you have a 50mm 2.8 isn't needed...still fun though
the 17-50mm is pretty good close up...get some tubes for it or a macro front end lens.
portrait?...there is a canon 55-200 IS now I think
I think you're on a budget so I'm suggesting these lenses. otherwise you can go nuts.
one nice macro and portrait lens in one is the sigma 105mm f2.8 or the canon macro ..85??? is it?

p.s tasty male??? what.!?!?! are you corn fed and free range or something?

24-105 is about £700. You could look at the 28-105mm which is more like £200.

Portraits - how about 85mm f1.8, also about £200.

i would use the 50mm for portraits. then get a sigma 24-70 for bout 250(i think) and that only leaves macro. put the extension tubes with the 50mm and you will be pretty sorted for most things. working to a low budget obviously.

I'd say

Walkabout - Sigma 17-70 as it's a fantastic range for a crop sensor allowing you to get good landscapes and telephoto/portrait shots. It also has a decent close focussing ability so can get some excellent wildlife closeups when out and about. For me it is a much more usefull focal length than the 24-105 on a crop sesnor which I would find lacking at the wide end, plus it's considerably cheaper!

Portrait - On a budget it has to be the nifty but you already have one so I'd suggest either the 85mm f2 or possibly a 70-200 F4 good for portraits and also versatile for candids etc. If money is tight an old 70-210mm either f4 (slowish focusing) or f3.5-4.5 (faster focussing) might be worth a look.

Macro - Not really me thing but the sigma macros get some excellent revies.

I've been a litle frustrated with my 17-70mm lately, found it to be lacking in sharpness (unless it's just my lens/calibration)

I've never seen a thread on hear with anything but praise for the 17-70 for what it is it's very sharp even compares well to some L glass in reviews.

OK you have a 400D, are you intending to move to full frame or a 1.3 crop camera, because that could influence your choice as to which lenses to get. Just asking because EF-S lenses will only work on 1.6 crop camera's.

As everybody is saying it's all about budget and expectations :)

When I started out with a 300D I wasn't sure if photography would stick (and if budget control would let me) so I decided to get a Jack-of-All-Trades lens.

I ended up with a Tamron 28-300 Xr Di Ld and loads of other letters , it cost £200 and lasted me three years until I started spending more :(

It's not a stunning lens but for sheer range / portability I haven't seen anything to beat it yet

Straight from the camera, just a resize/sharpen for the forum :)

I've still got the lens, minigub is having fun with it now

Er, what's going on in #1???!!!

lenses that would cover that for an APS-C sensor would be

a 17-50mm type lens
a 50-150 or 70-200 type lens
extention tubes to go on the telephoto above
and say an 85mm f1.8 prime

2k for canon lenses or around 1.5k for 3rd party versions

for a 135 sized sensor

a 24-70 type lens
70-200 type lens
extention tubes
50mm f1.4 prime or 85mm f1.8 prime

around 3K for the top end lenses or aroud 1.5k for 3rd party lenses

I've been contemplating a macro / portrait lens for my 400d, and have been looking at the EF-S 60mm. Seems like a quality product for ~£250. Hoping to get down to Park Cameras soon to have a play...
