I'm after either a 10-22mm EFS
or the 17 -40 mm L

I shoot with a 7d so it's a crop body they seem to be similarly priced I'm just hesitant because won't the L lens give better optical performance but the 10-22 be wider ?

Aiming to shoot landscapes :)

Thank you for any comments in advance.

They are both ultrawide angle lenses but the 10-22mm is designed as a UWA for crop while the 17-40mm is designed as a UWA for full frame.

Both are ideal for landscape work but dont get blinkered by the red ring of L and think that it has superior optical quality.
The 10-22 ef-s is sharp as a tack and well suited to a crop body as is the 17-55mm f2.8 ef-s lens which will give the 17-40 a run for its money.

The 10-22 is a great lens, no experience of the other one. Just so happens now I have a 5d mine is no use to me.

If it's for landscapes then I would go with the 10-22mm.

Another option covering much of the focal length of both lens' you mention would be the EF-S 15-85mm. I haven't got one but it gets very good reports.

Acquired a 17-40 F/4 L lens last night and although it is a really beautiful lens, I feel it would be some what wasted on a body with a crop sensor.

Ultrawide lens for landscape is not always the best choice, out of the two lenses you mentioned, I would prefer the 17-40mm but that's just my preference.

If you decide to go FF then you have the 17-40mm to go with it.:)

I honestly don't have any desire to do that, so it was just a matter of which is better for me now, is there any other lenses I should consider ?

Canon 17-55mm - great all round walkabout lens
Canon 15-85mm - as above but with extended range
Sigma 10-20mm - cheaper version of canon 10-22mm
Tokina 11-16mm - no experience of this lens
Tamron 17-50mm non VC - another good sharp walkabout lens

There will be others as well but I have no experience of them

Tokina 11-16mm Cracking lens. build quality is superb. optical quality is outstanding even wide open (f/2.8)
