I thought I'd do something different for Xmas 2011 hence This is not a Spam thread!

Lead bricks could possibly float if they have a large enough surface area :)

not if they retained typical brick dimensions and were solid- as they'd still have a greater displacement than the water below - a lead brick could float if it was made from very thin lead and was hollow or filled with helium etc

Thats just cheating :D

I didn't say anything about the bricks having to be solid... It could be a lead box in typical brick dimensions :)

Also the water could be really really salty - would a lead brick float in the dead sea for example ?

What are you trying to say here Moose ? :D

That we should treat you like we always did - ie like a big pink member :suspect: :naughty:

good question, might be worth a test, if I can get hold of some lead bricks or panels to make a box... I already have a large enough tank and quite a bit of salt

I supose we could nick some off a church roof

but it doesnt actually have to be lead - we could stipulate that a lead brick which is semi hollow would weigh approximately the same as an actual brick

it depends on how bored we are and whether we can be arsed

More importantly , would a dead snake float

well dead sheep float - I had to get one out of a pond once, bleddy thing burst and sprayed slimey gunk all over us.

 indeed

here's one for everyone, lifted from the BBC website.

You're in a row boat, which is in a large tank filled with water. You have an anchor on board, which you throw overboard (the chain is long enough so the anchor rests completely on the bottom of the tank). Does the water level in the tank rise or fall?

I think it falls, as the anchor in the boat pushes down causing the boat to sit more deeply in the water, leading to greater displacement of water around the boat.
As soon as the anchor is dropped the boat is now much lighter so there is less displacement, also the water can flow around the anchor, meaning the water level will fall, if only slightly.

:)

I reckon it remains constant until the anchor touches bottom - as while it is still falling it is still entirely supported by the boat - once the anchor is on the bottom the level should fall for the reasons you suggest - but only if the chain is long enough to permit the boat to rise out of the water
