I got a Canon EOS300 ages ago on ebay but only got around to getting batteries for it today. I'd decided to put on my 18-55mm kit lens that came with my EOS400D but after a lot of wiggleing etc realised that there was no way it was going to fit. I started to panic, thinking I had an unusuable camera (not the pennies to start buying different types of lenses) but tried my other lenses (Canon 50mm, Tamron 55-200, Canon 24-70mmL) and they all fit fine. Upon closer inspection I found that the fitting on the 18-55mm lens was considerably different. (my sister described it as being like an outy bellybutton instead of an inny, lol)

I thought all modern EF lenses were compatible with all modern EOS cameras. How come it's not the case with this lens. Are there other lenses that I will encounter this problem with? Can I buy some sort of converter?

The kit lens is EF-S for APS-C sized sensors only - Digital! (Excluding 5D and 1D series) :)

The 18-55 is an EF-S lens isnt it ? they are only compatible with certain bodies. The 300 isnt one of them i think. It should have a white mark on the lens barrel to line up with a white mark on the camera body.

Yup it cos the 18 - 55 is a ef-s that why it wont fit it not a EF

Ahh...well you learn something new every day. It is indeed an EF-S Lens. Oh well at least my other lenses work ok with it :)
