Pic for a local paper is another thing and I would charge them...they make money on selling papers and have funds for images.

No, newspapers make most of their money from advertising. The actual sales count to very little.

EVERY 'paper' my pictures have appeared in are free papers, one is free for the local area and one is a newsletter for the rescue. And they've not asked for MY pictures just a picture of the specific dog, which HAPPENS to be mine!

Anyway I'm not gonna get into more of an argument about sometihing that doesnt bother ME[no payment] I am doing it all for a GOOD cause that I support fully.

Regarding charity work - You should still charge, why wouldn't you? Just because they are a charity? Charities still have to pay for everything else, so why shouldn't they pay you?




You don't understand so you are making yourself part of the problem. You can't justify damaging the press industry by saying 'oh, it's fine to do it because we do the same for other industries like construction'.

Yeah you know what, why don't we all wait around and hope that some 'rich family' buys our photos?

And you don't 'get known' just from having a few photos in the local paper or even on the BBC, it means nothing but people always seem to think of it as a foot in the door.

Hi Butters In my case, it helped me, a local paper did a article on my photography and included some of my photos, through the newspaper article I got a photography job

When it comes down to it, no one should give stuff away for free, regardless of weather they do so for anything else.

I had some friends round for a barbeque recently. I didn't charge them. I realise now that by doing this I have harmed the outside-catering industry.

I've also agreed to feed our neighbours' cats and their kids' guinea pigs when they go on holiday. I'm not going to charge them. I realise now that by doing this I have harmed the pet-sitting industry.

But I must admit I'm not quite sure where I should draw the line.

It's about the industry, and yeah I do have a 'bee in my bonnet', because I work in an industry that is being slowly destroyed by amateurs who are completely unaware. It's idiotic.

It might be idiotic, but it's life. Technological change affects many industries, not just photography, and trying to fight it makes you sound like King Canute. Professionals need to adapt to it, find an angle or a niche that isn't being over-run by the hordes giving their work away for free, or do something else.

Considering that he hasn't bought the camera just to do the work and that the cost per image of digital photography is negligible, he's donating his time. Donating time to charity is a fairly normal thing to do, unless you're completely antisocial.

The days of being the only good photographer in the market are long gone, people can and will take perfectly acceptable images for certain uses and give them away because they just like taking photographs. If that's something that can put you out of business then you need to find a better business model.
