However, I've got a couple of questions, which I think will mainly directed at the pro's who post on here, but any other info will be greatly appreciated.

I've just recieved this message in my Flickr inbox:

Dear Mr Crawford,

We are the art studio for Bardahl in US and Canada. Our client wishes to use your photo of a Porsche on a poster, namely the one found at www.flickr.com/photos/richard_crawford/2860633492/sizes/o/in/set-72157606910328808/.
Please let us know if you authorize us to do so, and what your fee would be in such a case.

Should we find an agreement, we will need a high resolution (300 d.p.i.) at 36 inches wide.

Thanks for replying and best regards.

Two questions:
1) Do you think this is genuine?
2) What on earth should I charge for the use of my photo? I've never sold an image before so don't really know how this side of things works.

Any answers much appreciated.

1st thing is to ask if it's for personal use or private?

Their 'client' could be Marlboro or Sony or Michelin or some other Biggy and their idea of a poster could be your idea of a billboard!

Well, according to google, Bardahl is "the world leader in engine performance products". Looks like they make engine oil, fuel additives, that kind of thing, so it looks like it's wanted for use in an ad campaign.

The website www.jacqueschoquette.com look genuine and involved in this sort of purchase for clients.

Look at that site I would think they want it for a commercial use and your price should reflect that. I can give you a price, but sure other will help, maybe have a look at the NUJ site

Maybe ask petemc for a little advice, as if I recall he had this sort of thing with Bench a while ago and he might point you in the right direction.

Email them and ask exactly what usage rights they are asking for - you should get a reply like:

  • Usage rights - poster only, online use etc
  • Duration of Licence - 1 year, unlimited?
  • Area of use - USA/Canada only, or worldwide?

You can also offer unlimited worldwide use, for all media, for an extravagent sum...you retaining copyright of course!

just taking a wild guess but they're a french speaking agency and one of the names on that poster is e.leclerc with sales of over 30bn euros

Should we find an agreement, we will need a high resolution (300 d.p.i.) at 36 inches wide.

Thats a very large image, 3 times the size it's taken.

anyway, I've found this site that has a price calculator. I've just check the editorial prices, and they are pretty close to what I currently get (before commission) through my agencies. Ignore the picture, the price is the for most pictures on there.

I've always ignored these sorts of requests on Flickr, I get 3 or 4 per week and assumed everyone else does as well (the Flickr equivalent of spam), is that not the case?!

The only one I took any notice of was from Mosler, as they are very well known car manufacturer and it was clearly a genuine request.
