I think I remember why I *used* to enjoy photography.

Just back from a really enjoyable trip out to the Farne Islands - a great trip out to Staple Island and some pictures that I'm really pleased with.

Some of you will know that I recently sold up all my DSLR kit (Nikon D300 body etc) and got a cheap bridge camera. Unless I pixel peep, I would not know and printing at 5x7 it would be really difficult to know that I have gone cheap.

I did not lug a huge tripod (always a bugbear), nor a rucksack full of kit that I did not use. The camera would probably fit into my jacket pocket were I not quite so rotund - and the sale of my kit, after buying the bridge camera left me with £1600 in the bank.

I think you are to be commended on switching back to a bridge camera and selling all your dSLR kit (D300) I couldn't do it.

Amazing shots that I would be proud of (and you must be too) so it goes to prove it's not the kit you own but the talent and eye that takes a good shot.

Well done and enjoy your photos thats what photography as a pastime is for.

I too couldn't do it, but compact cameras are certainly getting impressive.

Chris, those shots are stunning and I wouldn't have believed they came from a bridge camera. I'm afraid I couldn't do without my D300 though!
I'm interested in doing The Farne Islands, tried last year but aborted due to bad weather. Was it a good trip and do you have any tips?
Brian
PS I also hate tripods!

What bridge camera was it out of curiosity ? :)

It is a Canon Powershot SX10IS - does tend to be soft at the extreme length but apart form that it is okay. There is obviously a trade off - the D300 was fantastic but seeing all the other guys on the boat struggling with tripods and rucksacks full of gear gave me a smile.

The Farne islands are a long way from Huntingdon, but well worth a trip. We took a 2.5hr boat trip that allows 1hr on Staple Island. You run the gauntlet through nesting Artic Terns (they attack you) and puffins I guess at the nearest point worth taking pictures, probably 10-20 feet away from the roped off areas. Hadrians Wall and a Roman fort at Housesteads was a bit wet but well worth the trouble.

Nice stuff - I've been using small, light and (relatively) cheap film and digital cameras for years and really don't miss lugging heavy kit about.

Perhaps it's not photography that you enjoy, but rather the feeling of satisfaction you get when you take a picture you like. Subtley different to enjoying photography itself I think.

I think that it is more the understanding that I can get a picture I am pleased with without the worry of not having the right lens with me and without having to lug the kitchen sink with me. The photography process can be the same whether you use a compact or a bridge or a DSLR.

I have little doubt that I will buy another DSLR when the time is right.

I've done the same thing once before. I sold all my DSLR stuff and got a bridge.
It lasted about 2 days!!
Pictures were great when they were small, but as soon as I viewed them full size on my 20" screen, the quality disappeared......

Other than taking pictures - what else is there to enjoy about photography?

Lots! I really enjoy the post production aspect. I love how photography gets me to places and events which I otherwise would have little interest in e.g. after years of not wanting to go on walks I discovered that I really enjoy hill walking as a means to better landscapes. I also love seeing my photos enjoyed by others, whether it's an exhibition or they're buying a print for their home. Then there's all the great people I've met through photography.

I have an 24" iMac - they look just fine! The thing that I am missing is shooting in RAW.

really great pictures! bridge cameras can be impressive, especially with the right eye for photography.

At least you got it right by selling your noink gear and swapping to Canon ;):D

Fair play to you Chris.
I don't like using our P&S, but I really like using my DSLR, just prefer it so that's what I use.
So we basically did the same thing, just chose the other option.
I hope you continue to enjoy the hobby and keep posting great photos

Actually it would appear that it is already there - just cannot get it to work. The ability to work in Raw with your link was one of the main reasons for going for the SX10.
Oh yeah - 1.02b 12 June!

Neat. Have you read through here?

...finally got it going this morning - had hoped to get it going before going to Hong Kong but to be honest the jpgs were fine anyway. As is the way with the 3rd party developed brews, they are not as simple as just pushing a menu option. I now have raw but have to find how to use them! I'll get there.
