I really want a Leica!!!!

Ok so I've bought an M9 and a Zeiss 50mm Planar lens.

I'm now seeing why people go on about these so much. Extremely impressive, really impressive image quality and a delight to use.

The best way I can describe the pictures is that a thin veil has been lifted from the sensor (which I guess it has with the lack of an anti alias filter). The Zeiss lens is gobsmacking too, beautiful flare treatment, sharper than anything I've used before including any Canon L primes.

Chuffed so far after a week and 3 serious outings with it.

Congratulations! We need to see some pics then.

Congrats. I'm officially jealous. I keep fiddling around trying to like the 5D2 and getting plenty of fun from trying different lenses on the E-P1 (waiting rather impatiently for the postman to bring a Leica 40mm Summicron-C on friday) but feel inexorably drawn to an M8 + Zeiss Sonnar 50mm. Must resist, that way madness lies.

Jesus... how the other half live

The tragedy is, she'd probably get better results with a PowerShot or Coolpix :(

What tragedy? She bought a camera and a couple of lenses, and could probably afford them quite easily. I know a couple of people who own cars in the + £100K bracket and just use them for commuting. Doesn't seem to bother them.

How do you know she will take terrible pictures?

The OP suggested that this was a well-heeled but inexperienced photographer who wasn't prepared for the demands of operating a manual rangefinder camera.

I recently ran a training session for a lady who bought a leica M9 plus 2 lenses from Harrods camera dept (£9000). I reasearched the camera thoroughly before the session and pitched the training session appropriately for the non-technical holiday snapping lady who was horrified at the involvement required in using the camera.

I don't begrudge the lady her purchase (though I must admit I am a teeny bit jealous of anyone who can go into Harrods and drop £9k on a camera  ) but I suspect she'd get better results with one of the myriad point'n'shoot compacts on the market.
