(Another really informative thread title...)

Go to MSN and get whatever @live.co.uk

It's free.

Don't use hotmail or any of that type of e-mail address. Spend a few quid (about £20) and get yourself a proper domain name. Something ike frankee.co.uk or com. It looks much more professional and it allows you to have a website with the same name as your e-mail.

So I say, if you're going to do it, do it properly.

Seconded, will be the best advice you get on the matter.

You can set domain to forward to your isp mail or host it and use your own domain pop3 account.

You can get an Instant Mail account through 1and1.co.uk with your choice of domain name, costs around £1 per month...

Link is here 1 And 1 Instant Mail

You can always bolt a website onto this when you want to upgrade.

If you want to look a little more professional then go to Lycos and go to the web hosting section. There you can find your own domain name, register it and get the hosting packing for about 80 quid a year or about £7 per month.

That way you can use your existing mail client to receive your mail, like outlook, outlook express and apple mail etc.

I am not too sure but I think it has a basic website building software too so you could even go and post pictures on your own site pretty much right away. Alternatively design a proper site and upload it via ftp.

Lycos is quite good because it has a user control panel that lets you manage everything yourself. You can add up to about 20 email addresses yourself which is quite handy. I have used it for some time now hassle free.

£80 a year??? That is quite steep! It can be done for much cheaper than that!

Simple!
Buy a domain from www.freeparking.co.uk for something like £10 a year, or 123-reg.co.uk (I think they have a special on at the moment, buy a .com and get a .co.uk free)

Then get http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/editions_spe.html google apps for your domain! The free version will do you fine, and google's mail management system is fantastic. They'll back everything up, you don't have to worry. You get to use your proper e-mail address and their mail management system. There are no adverts for them in the e-mails you send out either.

Brinkster.com here ... I have three different accounts with them, and their rookie package is only $4 a month (about £2/month UK). They've been going for a long time, have an excellent live help support network, and are very good value for money. Plus, they're scalable, so should you need to upgrade to a more comprehensive package in the future, they're good for it.

I have a couple of domain names from 123-reg.com, and I host with hosting-unlimited.net. I think that lot comes to about £30 a year? The hosting package is their base package though, as I don't really use my websites, and just stick everything on flickr now.
