I need to moan

I need some sympathy... I have just taken my camera to Jessops (something to do with the focus) and they've taken it off me for 4 WHOLE WEEKS! Noooo....!!! I'm unsure how I am going to cope with this devistation! Plus, my sister is getting married next week and I wanted to get some nice photos of her getting ready. Grr..... Back to the old film camera for a while!

Thought as this is a rant thread (thanks Betty) I could discuss my misfortune here! :(

Hey, rant away! :D I could rant about work in here, but I wont cos its not the time or the place :D

On another forum I frequent, we actually have a "Rant Thread". It works really, really well, we could do with that over here :D

Imnot a pro as yet-but am working on it and personally i have never had anice comment made about me trying to make it in this world-generally pro togs are very rude and bolshy.

When often there is only a very small gap between pro and almost pro-or even good amatuer.

Just had a look at your site
It may be an idea to spell professional correctly or maybe thats the small gap ?

As a career snapper, I follow the wise teachings of James Brown. "I got mine, don't worry 'bout his".

I get on with my business the way I see fit, I don't generally let anyone tell me how to run my affairs and I don't try to tell other people how to do theirs.

I will quite happily point out the puddles and holes I've trodden in to people, if they want to ask.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, everyone can be as honest as they want, but there simply is no excuse for being rude and lacking manners :)

Never mind forums, wise words for all of life me thinks.

At the end of the day if YOUR happy with the photo you have taken and EVEN if you have photoshopped it till it looks bloomin marvellous who cares as long as YOUR happy with it. Never mind the rest. If you take the most perfect exposure/composition etc etc you will still get the nitpickers that will tell you "telephone line way in the distance should get cloned out" or similar. Strong critique should really be kept to the "InDepth Critique" forum.

I have found a great help from TP and I've never had snide remarks (at least not said to me on the forum) even after posting crap pics, or I would have got meself barred for swearing at em :p
I am another crap but proud member (must get the avatar) with no intention of turning into pro, 2 yrs from retirement I've no intention of doing it for money, it makes me happy. Pros trying to put off noobs i think is down to their insecurity and afraid someone is going to be better than them, also that it means more competition with them for business. Go get em Betty.

As a professional for 25 years and yes I do know what I am talking about
What gets me is not the amateur who wants to progress but the amateur that thinks its all a piece of **** and then produces something very average which all the other wannabees coo over because they know no better.
Forums contain far too much praise for sub standard pictures and whats worse is when those pics are sold as pro work
This is what has crippled the industry.
Obviously I was a beginner once upon a time but I learnt my trade the proper way by assisting for many hard years and gradually taking on responsibility
What I didnt do is pop into Jessops buy myself some crap body with a kit lens and announce myself a pro.
This is what I object to and will continue to object to.

Hear, Hear!

I'm a relative noob, and I really want constructive, actionable criticism, I was surprised that people apologised for it at first. I worry that because I've criticized in the way I'm used to receiving criticism (Hard, Fast, Non-Sugarcoated, but crucially Actionable) and it feels like I've made myself look like a big bad wolf.

I'm all for feet on the ground criticism from the "Pros" be as negative as you damn like, so long as it contains something actionable.

"I don't like it" is near useless
"I don't like it because x" is usable
"I don't like it because x but consider y next time" is like a gift.

I'm an amateur but completely agree with that.
