I have been asked by the local newspaper to constuct a portfolio so they can see if they want to use my pictures.

What is the best way to do a Portfolio??

What sort of layouts should I do?

All advice will be taken on board.

THank you very much in advance

Matt

If they want a print portfolio then go to a descent art/craft shop (London Graphics Center is very good, I bought my binder from there, £40 and looks really nice) or browse online at somehwere like http://www.silverprint.co.uk or http://www.plasticsandwich.co.uk/ and get a nice portfolio binder. I recommend A4 size.

Then get about 15 of your BEST photos, get them printed A4 size and put one on each page with a small caption underneath each photo describing what it is (give each image a name, description and date). Great place for printing is http://www.togsprint.co.uk

I was suggesting the cheaper photobox photobooks as they could be regarded as almost disposable. A nicer portfolio in larger sizes would be nice to have as well, but something you can stuff in your camera bag and doesn't matter *that much* is a good thing to have.

The magazine Which Digital Camera did a comparison test of photo books this month and came up with Bonusprint as the best buy. Their charges are Large Book 30 Images of 12 inch by 12 inch £29:99, Medium Book 20 Images of 8 inch by 12 inch £19:99. They do a Pocket Book and a Mini Album. My view go for the Large Book; it's an extra tenner but it will have a greater impact. How are you going to restrict yourself to 30 images? Good news that someone wants a portfolio of your work. Congratulations.

Not cheap then!! I will have to have think and discuss it with my mum.

I think I will put in some of every area of photography have I addressed and only the best ones. I will be very harsh on my self.

Thjank yuo :D

Actually, I think Photobox or one of the others had a free photobook offer running in Digital Camera or Amatuer Photographer.....

quality not quantity 12 max - your best photos - but ones that they would like to use - show horizontal and vertical shots - news papers always want both if you shoot for them to fit in with the text in the papers, so show both in your collection.

:agree:

Have a look at a copy of the newspaper that wants to see your portfolio and then try and choose images that fit their style. Following on from what sportysnaps said, shots that leave some space to the righthand side are good as they allow a headline to be placed within the picture.

You shouldn't just throw in pictures, you should have a a heading (one or two words) that will sum up the photographs under that heading, e.g. Movement, or Light.

about 10 pics under a few headings is a good idea
