Ok maybe not need but want. I do portraits and weddings and don't use much at a longer range but I want to do some sports etc for fun. That being the case I have a limited budget as it won't make me any money in the near future. Im looking at least 300mm for on my 50d. But I think I can't really go over £500 but would like something good quality and ideally f4 or better to use a 1.4 converter too. Any ideas?

100-400L used - two on amazon from 475GBP

Nothing really out there for you, the closest is the canon 300mm f/4 but your probably looking at £280 over budget for a 2nd hand one.

475 is way to cheap for a legit 100-400

I think the 300 f/4L is the only 300 faster the f/5.6 you'll get for <£500

Yeah might go that way then. Anything 3rd party worth looking at

You might just get a used sigma 100-300 F/4 HSM if you go a little over budget.
IQ won't be quite as good as the 300L, but you've got the zoom should you need it.

My other idea was a used sigma but I don't if that would sacrifice too much iq. Obviously wouldn't use a converter

I've heard very varying reports on IQ from the 100-300
Some reviews love it, some hate it. Seems sigma's occasionally dodgy QC is particularly bad for this lens.

A very good review:
http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/328-sigma-af-100-300mm-f4-ex-hsm-apo-lab-test-report--review

A very bad review:
http://www.juzaphoto.com/eng/articles/canon_300_4-sigma_100-300_canon_100-400.htm

And note that the guy doing the bad review is reviewing his second copy, the first he tested was even worse.

How important do you think the zoom would be to you? Because they seem pretty rare on the second hand market, and from a lot of places you've got no guaranty of how good a copy it is.
Personally I'd get the 300L, then if you don't like shooting with the prime, you can always sell it on for what you paid for it.

I would be happy with a prime as with a converter as well I would have 2 in one. Also having got the 100 is l macro I appreciate how good an l prime is.

At that price its actually cheaper to buy 2. U could keep one nearly for free

Apologies - I went back and looked as I didn't think I was not seeing things. A 70-200 lenses came up in the same search when I looked for 100-400. I guess in my haste, and confidence in the search engine I did not look close enough. Two used 70-200s one, 2.8, for 450 now, body has scratches.

I picked up my used 300/4L for £400.00 and it's an absolute cracker! Mate it with either a used Canon 1.4x TC Mk I or a new Kenko 300 DGX Pro 1.4x TC and you're in business. I genuinely don't think you will get a lens with better IQ in that limited price bracket.
