I need some opinions on a zoom lens for a Canon 40D.

I have a budget of around £450 (i could stretch a bit more for the right one) to buy a lens for my Canon 40D that would be ideal to use for some bird shots which will be my practice subject to learn photography and also to take some sporting shots like rallying and some rugby action pics.

I was looking at the lens below so some opinions on this would be good and any other suggestions would be appreciated, it would need to have good zoom capabilities and preferably image stabilising. Thanks

Looked at your lens link - A tad over budget at almost £750  For that you could almost get a second hand 100-400:thumbs:

I won`t be buying from warehouse express as their prices seem very high at the min, that link was just get some opinions on that particular lens as ive seen them going around the £480 mark on ebay and only slightly used.

I used the 70 -300mm IS f4 - 5.6 for exactly what you want to do.
I found it a great all-round walkabout lens and used it for most of my first year using a EOS 40D.

I've only just taken it off my camera as I've just bought a 300mm F4L IS.

I would definitely recommend the 70-300 as your zoom lens, and it should come in pretty close to budget.

My advice would be to stretch your budget just a little and hunt down a 35-350L. It'll probably look a little rough around the edges externally (for that kind of money anyway) but it's a solid chunk and covers a lot of options all in one package. I sold mine for £475 late last year but the market has crept up since and £550-600 should find one.

Thanks, i think i`ll save up a bit more money and go for either the lens you recommend which is the 35-350 L or the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens which would be my preference as its got image stabilising and with being new to photography this would help with kind of shots i will be taking.
