An example image would be a great help to understand what the problem is

What he said.

It depends what youy want to birghten, if its a few faces say and a small part of the image the dodge(or burn?) tool might do it.

If its the whole upper half of the pic, duplicate layer, brightness contrast adjust layer on it, clip adjustment layer to top image then use a gradient fill black/white perhaps on the mask to reveal the ok bits of the underneath layer. (EDIT: you wont need to do the clipping in CS5 just stick a layer mask in)

Open the image in CS5 using ACR. This gives you a lot more controls for image adjustment, and is easier to do. ( If you are shooting RAW then it will open in ACR automatically) i not you have to tell it to do so. If you right click on the image in Bridge, you get the option to open in Camera Raw.

The initial tab has various controls. you could try using the recovery slider to haul back the burned out highlights. This works better on RAW images as there is more data available than JPEGs

Alternatively go to the second tab which is curves, and use either ,and or, the highlights and lights sliders.

You might find this easier than using masks and layers

Also it CS5, ACR you could use either the Targeted Adjustment Tool or the Adjustment Brush or both in a combination

on no3 iv tryed to darken the sky,but the whole photo has gone dark as you can see :'(

Not sure what to suggest for the first one, but my experience at PP is limited.

I think the horse looks pretty good now, if the background was darkened the contrast with the animal would be lost, IMO.

So I had a quick go with the last one.

In reality there is no way you are going to darken or replace the burnt out background in the portrait without it looking false, simply because the edges of the hair are backlighted and burnt out.

Saying that it is worth making the best of what you have with such a cute looking little girl.

I played with it in LR3 to give you a idea and you should have the same tools in CS5's ACR.
