Some very different options, and very different costs.

What's your budget? What do you mean by portable? Studio flash or hot-shoe?

I want to use it at parties ie people at tables on dance floors etc. I am thinking of getting a clamp to hold the flash higher above the camera so not hot shoe.

You need to give us an idea of what your budget is, no point in people suggesting, say an Elinchrom Quadra set up for a couple of grand if your budget is fifty quid or something like that ;)

Sorry forgot to say about £1500 or so.

for portability I'd be tempted to go strobist for this, couplea folding manfrotto stands and 580exIIs/sb900s with radio slaves

Taking a punt then, a Manfrotto bracket like the link below, with a nice big Nikon gun fired through a brolly (which I use) or one of FlashInThePan's softboxes, linked by a dedicated cable for full i-TTL auto.

I sometimes use two guns, one in the hot-shoe pointing straight up. It can light up a whole room, with the lovely portrait light going forward. Just point and squirt.

It's big and cumbersome, because it has to be, but it works really very well for social type events. You also look like a total goon, but that can't be avoided either :D

This bracket is what makes it possible to carry a small studio on your camera. It's strong and adjusts every which way  http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-manfrotto-mn233b-camera-flash-bracket/p11017
