Hi folks,

First post here, but I have been a lurker for a while.

I already have a 40D, EF-S 60mm and EF-S 17-55 IS.

I love the 60mm, but I really miss the IS, and my 17-55 isn't any where near as sharp, so I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good solid lens that is as sharp, or sharper than the 60mm, but with IS and a moderate wide angle zoom please?

I'm happy to spend a few £££/$$$ to get a good all rounder that suits my needs, I just need a bit of help finding it!

Thanks

none, nothing wider than the 17-55 with IS, the only option is 24-105 IS but that's nor as fast of wide

David,

Building a zoom that is as sharp as a macro prime isn't really feasible and being wide makes it even less likely. There are a few zooms down at the wide end that resolve pretty well but "as sharp, or sharper than the 60mm" is not going to be possible.

Thanks for the replies.

I had a feeling it might be a little optimistic, but it was worth a shot.

What about if I lower my sights slightly, and still keep the IS and sharpness, but lose the wide angle and go for something in the 50-100 region?

So, just out of curiosity, these uber expensive L lenses, they won't match the 60mm for sharpness?

Does the fact that the 60mm isn't IS make it sharper?

Still learning :)

David,

The IS adds another lens group and everything that's put in the light path will reduce the sharpness to a larger or smaller degree. Similarly the capability to zoom requires compromises to be made.

The 70-200 f/4 IS is about the best resolving IS zoom in Canon's range but it's not going to be as sharp or sharper than a prime macro.

Agree with Bob. I have a 100 Macro and 24-105L. The macro lens beats the L lens at any given apperture at 100mm. But then at 24-95mm, the L lens beats the macro. :)

Thanks Chaps!

Looks like I've got some thinking to do then :)
