... OOOh errr!!!

Sorry couldnt resist, such a silly name!

So, finally got BB, my sons is up and running but he said I need to buy a dongle for my desktop to get going, so alas Im still using dial-up for a bit.

I dont know the first thing about dongles, is a dongle just a dongle or are there brands/types I should stay away from?

Some help here please guys if you will, I havent a clue what to buy so feel Im peeing in the wind!

Dongle???? I assume you're talking about the microfilters on the line to split the ADSL and voice carriers?

If so you don't actually need them to use the broadband connection although you will get cut off when the phone is picked up without them so they're more or less essential. They're pretty simple bits of kit and while there are good ones and bad ones there are no recognised brands so it is a bit hit and miss. Watch out for the usual "you get what you pay for" argument, they're so cheap that decent ones can still end up being cheaper than overpriced tat from some suppliers.

Do you mean a 'wireless dongle' so you can both use your broadband connection?

Someone here will be able to help I'm sure. All I know is if one machine is XP and the other Vista then it's not possible. (Unless you know different. Please spill the secret)

Thanks peeps, yes I mean a wireless dongle so we can both use BB.
Both on XP.
I have to admit I have no clue what the hell Im talking about (no change there)

My son just told me that I needed a dongle as he left for work
I knew you guys would know ;)

Vista and XP can both make a wireless connection to the same router.

Its a really simple process Glo and I'm sure your son can do the necessary once you provide the hardware. If not, just shout, and we'll talk you through it :)

GLO ...

Cos you made me laugh ... ... with your intro ...

I have one of these Dongles that came with my new PC and I don't use/need it ... yours if you want just for the sake of a PM and addy ...

:p

Personally instead of the dongle I would go with the wireless laptop card.

Here's a link to it.

The dongles are susceptible to break off whilst hanging from your USB ports especially when you are keeping your laptop on you guess it right your lap whereas the card just slides inside the slot and is kept secured from breaking etc.

Hi there.

Presuming you already have the wireless router, you will require either a 'dongle' or a card that istalls inside your computer.

The advice above about USB dongles snapping off, etc is correct. However, if you don't know much about PC's and are scared about taking the lid off it, I would go for a dongle over a network card.

Look for any that do 802.11g (most do). Simply plug it in and it should find your wireless network.

The link below is for a dongle that would work, and is cheaper than the Jessops of computing - PC World !!

Good luck!!

dongle or PC card. I would personally have the PC card rather than dongling it.

And if you went with a decent BB provider *cough*, you would have received a free dongle ;)

Is there a big distance between your pc and router? How far roughly?
