Heres the story,

My bike has a knackered 4 speed sealed hub. This means that I pedal like the clappers and manage about 7mph.

I cycle to work, but since my bikes useless, I've been using the missus's.

The missus's bike has now been stolen out of the garden.

I've looked in the papers and on ebay, but its really difficult to find a gents commuter bike. All's I want is something thats comfy, has thin tyres and working gears. How hard can it be ?

Oh, and I've only got around £40.

Replace the hub? it's not difficult though you need a special (inexpensive) tool to do it.

I priced a hub up @ £60.

I only paid £26 for the bike.

2nd hand hubs rarely come up otherwise this would solved the problem. Cheers for the thought.

In warrington there are some new bike shops, But I guess your not wanting to spend a lot?

Take a visit to the Council tip/recycling depot and wherever the Police have stuff auctioned off.

Hereabouts they are (or were) disposed of through a local auctioneers.

I think it varies by area.

I know that round here you cant get anything from the recycling place - it all goes to companies which is damned silly when you can see a broken xyz that you know has no value and will be junked, but the conunterclockwise widget on it would repair yours. And the auctions are held in an out of the way place so they get sod all for stuff anyway.

Speak to your employer about the cycle to work scheme. It's cost neutral for him and you get a decent bike less tax and vat for a deduction from your salary every month for a year.

4 speed? is it a stermy archer (internal sealed) hub?

Its a shimano Nexus 4 hub :
