Visually stunning.

A 27” screen that oozes rich, vibrant, saturated colour.
A fabulous aluminium keyboard (shame about the piece of plastic Apple stuck on the back of it.) The cable on the keyboard is a bit on the short side, another 12” would have been far better, and the wire feels like it will snap if you touch it.
The mouse is cool, but I hate the tiny little ball that’s on the top, it’s neither use nor ornament, giving very little control over scrolling.

The default size of the web-pages is a bit on the small side considering the size of the screen, but I have now found out how to make them larger, although the “Genius” in the Apple store at Meadowhell hadn’t a clue how to do it.

i-Tunes: when you copy a CD to your hard drive i-tunes will add the album title, performer and track listings etc. But it will not download the album cover artwork (unless you have an account with i-tunes, and you have to supply credit card details to create an account), nor will it group albums by the same performer into a separate folder.

Only four USB ports and one Firewire port, I’m sure Apple could have put more in if they had wanted to.

No card-reader, although there is an SD card slot. There again I’m sure Apple could have put a CF card slot in there as well.

Conclusion: An overpriced, extra-large laptop with vibrant colour rendition and stunning resolution.

But they do look good. And so far a joy to use.

Whilst I’m quite happy with the i-Mac, I won’t be joining the Mac “Fanboy” club anytime soon.

Surely you could have come to that conclusion whilst browsing in the shop all the things you mentioned are there to see you could have saved yourself the money by having a wander round the apple store.

I thought the new magic mouse was being sold with the 27" machines along with wireless keyboard?

Nigel

Nope, mine doesn't make me a cup of tea in the morning, or get my car warmed up ready for me before I leave for work in the morning. Wish they told me that before I bought it. Don't know why I bothered buying a Mac

Don't you get a keyboard extension cable when you get the keyboard with an iMac, or do you on;y get that when you buy the keyboard on it's own?

If you have the wired keyboard you have 6 USB ports,

If the keyboard cable length was going to be an issue, why did you select it and not just have the standard wireless one.

Same with the mouse the standard mouse in the new Magic Mouse, the "older" Mighty Mouse is a user selectable option.

OH before you rant how great the screen is do the grey bar test to check if there is a yellow tint to the middle and bottom right, of course you maybe one of the few who have got a good "Ultimate Screen"

I too have a 27"  iMac and my yellow tint is not that bad, but it will go back when/if Apple can ever get them right.

Mine so far hasn't catapulted my landscapes into the Joe Cornish league either................. wish they would have mentioned that in the Apple store :'(

The firewire post isn't really an issue as most pieces of hardware come with two ports on the back enabling you to daisy chain them, my WD Ext HD certainly has.

You get one with a mac pro. check the list of included items they might have missed it. They are only a few pounds anyway.

You can open an itunes account without a credit card. Open itunes , go to the store ,then the app store and find a free app. Get that app and it will invite you to open an account, on the page for your credit card details there is an option of "no card", click that and you are done.
This method allows you also to have accounts in various countries, which is handy for getting free stuff like last years "twelve days of christmas" promotion.

ps.congrats on the imac!

I missed the cleaning cloth when I got my MacBook, there always seems to be so many packages inside packages with new computers.

I wouldn't call it an "extra-large laptop" its got a proper fast hard drive and proper processor. Its also got Apple magic in it. Try watching iplayer in HD on a PC, then using the same connection on your Apple. In my home the PC moans about "insufficient bandwidth" but the Apple just plays it beautifully.

so a mac magicly makes more bandwidth on your internet connection? wikid!

Not necesarily. The PC could be making a mess of the bandwidth on his internet connection. Wikid!

You must have stipulated the wired KB & Mouse as std they now come with wireless & the fantastic new Magic Mouse. My only complaint is I wish they still made the large wireless KB. I saw one S/H recently in excellent condition but didnt have any money with me. Dame thing had gone the next week I went back.

When I got mine I asked for a full size keyboard rather than the wireless one. No problem I got one (and still kept the smaller wireless one.) no charge Magic Mouse is fantastic. Does tend to go through batteries though, rechargeable are the answer

yeah okay there are some throttling options but to drop the bandwidth that significantly by a system default? nah. unless there was something seriously wrong with the network card/connection.

Both Imac and PC are connected to a multi-port router, the connections can be reversed, but the bandwidth error message always appears on the PC. In truth the PC is quite old. The message probably refers to a lack internal bus bandwidth rather than anything external. A more modern PC may not have the same problem. (But it would still suffer, interminable boot/shutdown times, require antivirus software and annoying software updates. It would also not be as pretty as an iMac or as quiet)

It does on mine. Have you checked the Keep iTunes Media folder organized" checkbox in preferences?

You do not need a credit card to open an iTunes account. "buy" something that is free and when it asks about opening an account there is an option something like "no card". With this ticked you can then use the download option. If it misses the artwork the just select the whole album in iTunes and select right mouse and edit. Then drag the jpg of the album cover into the empty square. You can virtually always get the cover by typing the album name into google images.

once again, more fanboy rubbish :schtum:

You are comparing a new(er)? imac to an old PC... no suprise your mac might be faster perhaps? And once AGAIN... my win7 PC never suffers from the "stuff that all PC's suffer from" that mac fanboys spout

So you don't need anti virus, and you don't do updates? Must be the first!

Wait 6 months and do nothing, and do the same to an OSX mac. See which runs quicker then. Some things are not just fanboyish you know, also name me a PC as pretty as an IMac?

Why is anything good said about a Mac taken to be fanboyism? To me, what you just said above amounts to PC fanboyism as much as anything.

Depends on what you use the PC for, I have 2 that neither use software updates or anti-virus.. for their applications its simply not required.

My main business machine does indeed run bit defender and gets updates for win 7... but are they "annoying" as the person stated? nope, they happen in the background. Plus, it has no impact whatsoever on my laptops performance (but in fairness its an i7 quad with 8gb ram).

Wait 6 months and do nothing, and do the same to an OSX mac. See which runs quicker then.

My gaming rig has been running win7 64bit since beta and its never had any problems running that have required me to do any maintainance, so again this is untrue.

If you know how to use a PC then you dont get the issues that people keep complaining about. Others who dont want the "hassle" of running a PC can buy a MAC.

I can see the attraction in both (in fact I almost bought the 27" imac) I just laugh when people make sweeping comments that are untrue.

I admitted that the comparison was unfair, however frequent windows updates are a fact, The need for antivirus software is fact. The boot and shut down times of the average PC are very much longer than the average Mac, Macs are better looking than their Windows counterparts.

What have I said that is untrue?

Please guys, don't turn this into yet another willy waving "my computer's better than your computer" thread. We've had more than enough of those.

:suspect:

Mac's are good
PC's are good

It just depends which you prefer.

End of argument.

I'm pretty certain OSX has software updates too. ;)

As for a mac being better looking than all other PCs, well... Looks for one are subjective and two, have you seen every PC case on the market?

The new iMac is starting to look very nice, and the new macbooks are very nice, but then have a look at Lian Li cases (as an example), very nice too...

PCs aren't just the £400 nasty plastic things you see in PC world, that's the cheap consumer end, there's a high end expensive end too.:p

Agreed there are some amazing cases, but the Imac is the ultimate style solution. Just a screen, a keyboard and a mouse. The design is simply stunning, a modern design classic.

Macs are not perfect but they do tend to work better than anything else.
