Now it is all going pear shaped.

On the 2nd/3rd week the brakes went, car off road for a few days, 40 quid later I am back on the road only for the Oil Pressure switch to go and spary oil everywhere and me being off the road for another day :(

Then I get a ALMIGHTY hole in my exhuast so it sounds more John Deere then Vauxhall corsa. Lived with it for three weeks then got really annoyed with it and went and got a new one. To start with it was 'yeah mate, 40 quid for the middle pipe, is that ok?' me: 'Yeah, that is awesome.' 1/2 hour later. 'Errrr can you come look at this?' Went over to car. 'Shake your back box.' b****r, the baffles have gone so that was anoth 50 pound. 90 pound later, I have a fixed car. Happy days!!!! The first week it has run properly since I bought and i was looking forward to the weekend.......

then on the way home to day the clutch cable goes, leaving me strandad on a cross-road. Thankfully some lads pushed me to safety. So I am off the road.....again.

At least the car may go faster with my now very light wallet!

Well you can drive without a clutch but you need to judge the revs pretty closely to avoid damaging your gearbox.

You drove about for THREE WEEKS with a defective exhaust? :cuckoo:

I know how you feel though, since Sunday I've had two insurance excess payments and a parking ticket to pay :bang:

If you don't laugh, you'll cry :lol:
 
just to **** you off even more...

i've not long chucked a full exhaust system out for a corsa, as it was taking space up in the garage, and i was never going use it again...

Motoring makes photography look positively cheapskate!
Sorry Matt... better get used to it 'cos it's not going to get any better. Even if you bought a brand new car that you just knew wasn't going to give you any repair costs, the depreciation alone would make you cringe.

its not just new cars nowadays, it seems to be them all :(

paid 5k for my car 15 months back, lucky to get 2-2.5k in todays climate :(
 
Aww no, that is rubbish. But I know exactly how you feel, Matt, what with me speaking as someone who can only afford 9 or 10 years old cars. I've brought cars that actually did well, and others that turned out to be right lemons.
But it's not always bad. You'll go through periods where you won't experience any further car-related problems and you begin to forget all that what you've typed up had happened to you . . . until you take the car in for it's MOT. :eek: :bonk: :help:
 
I used to buy a car with 12 months MOT every year and scrap it and only fix essentials back in the day :P

That used to be the way I did it too, but my last wee Corsa ended up working out at under £7 a week in depreciation and repair costs including an exhaust, tyres etc.

That's cheaper than getting the bus :lol:
 
Being an ex owner of a corsa,I know EXACTLY what your going through. First 2 minutes of driving it..clutch went..the list of faults went on an on that year. Get rid of it now whilst you can :lol:

Look on the bright side Matt. At this rate, by the end of the summer it'll be 90% new parts so there won't be anything else to go wrong and you won't get stranded in the middle of winter.

We've all been through it - I learned how to use a socket set and a Haynes manual PDQ when I first started driving (ironically that was a Vauxhall too - a Chevette, followed by another Vauxhall - a Viva).

Come to think of it, I still spend to much time underneath cars now, but that's because I always seem to end up with Land Rovers.

Cambelt replacement? £160
New set of tyres and tracking? £225
New tyre? £40
Insurance (1st year)? £2000
Insurance (2nd year)? £110 p/m
Tax? £140
Having a car that eats into 3/4 of your paycheck which you know you're just going to sell in 3 month's time? Priceless.
 
All we seem to see are young kids chucking money on crappy old European cars like Corsas, Saxos, Fiat and Ford Whatevers, for some reason - I don't know. Is it a fashion thing? Are they dirt cheap to buy and insure? No idea. Whatever the reason, the fact is they are all piles of relentlessly unreliable crap. Year after year they all come bottom of the list in the Which league tables for reliability and satisfaction. Who always come top? You all know. Honda, Nissan, Toyota (not necessarily in that order).

Still, who am I to judge, having had a Land Rover Discovery 2 for the last 3 years which has been totally reliable.
 
If it has T*TS or wheels, no matter how much you love it or how much money you thow at it.... you'll have trouble!
 
Bad luck there matey. I think most of us have been in that position and know the pain. It should get better though after the most worn bits have been replaced.
As an aside, have you considered personal leasing? You'll get some cars for under £100/month and never need to worry about repairs. Tax and insure it and put fuel in it.

I think you'll find that it's a cost thing. Not many (if any) young people can afford a Land Rover discovery.

it always makes me laugh when people just dont realise how much having/running/maintaining a car can really cost.
I've been skint 2 months running because if it. Last month I put it in for a Full Service and had some new rear pads....£270.
This month ive had 2 new tyres £90, car tax £120 for 6 months :-s and going in for MOT tomorrow.

I seriously needa win the lotto soon lol :p

I never said nor implied that they could. I was pointing out that European cars are generally unreliable compared to Japanese makes, but there's always the exception as in my Discovery.

You've been lucky, the Disco 2 has a reputation for being one of the most unreliable cars on the market, it's consistently languished at the bottom of the owner surveys ....

I know. It's what concerned me before I decided to get it. But I bought it from a reputable dealer, it looked like it was new with 40,000 miles, all the extras, was a damned good price, and had 2 years warranty. And it's a 4000cc V8. So I let my heart rule, and it turned out ok.

My 1st car was a Rover ... I had it for 6 yrs, and apart from replacing tyres (quite a bit) and brake pads (once) the total I spent in repairs over that time was £90 ;)

On the other hand, there's absolutely nothing wrong with my current car and I've spent a small fortune on it ...

The stupid skip has cost me nigh on £300 in a week. Not best pleased. Oh and on the way home from my long exposure trip, the temprature was off the scale. Only filled up the water last week. b****r.

Well that could be a stuck thermostat or your head gasket is screwed too... In which case, wanna buy a push bike? :lol:
 
TBH I have gone past the point of caring with this peice of ****. people say your meant to lov your first car. I dread every journey in it wondering weather I will make it or not.

Yeah, I am not in a good mood.
