And that lesson is always use a lens hood!
I had the displeasure of watching my camera head for the ground lens (24-70) first! I was briefly distracted while adjusting the camera and tripod, which left it with no supporting leg to the front. Cue one large gust of wind, and the whole thing tipped(to me in slow motion), landing lens first on a rocky beach.
Thankfully the hood took the impact, and broke pushing it back up the lens body, but this luckily kept the front element from impacting, and luckily it had no damage at all!
I think had it been a harder fall that I might not have been so lucky. Ironically this was the first time I had been out landscaping with this lens ,and I had only added it to my insurance last night! I'm not sure how they would have reacted to a phone call less than 24 hours later!
