First studio session with my new Sigma 85mm 1.4 and I love it. Just so sharp at f8. 100% crop below.

B***ocks there goes my savings! pin-sharp that, got to get one.

I'm not poo-pooing the joy you have for your new acquisition, but aren't most half decent lenses sharp at f8?

Sure, but it is definitely sharper than my 24/70L at F8.

Let's see the full image?

Whilst I (and the client) know that I have copyright, I'm not happy to put a client image up here unless the client is OK with it particularly when it is their child we are talking about. I always ask first out of courtesy, as keeping clients happy is important.

I have to say I don't think it's that good for f8, I'd expect his lugs and everything to be sharp at that aperture. It's a £700 lens so I'd be expecting it to be spot on.

Can we see the pic straight out of the camera without the sharpening?

Here you go a similar crop with no PP at all....

On the other hand, I would love to see this lens compared to the NIKON's 85 1.4D. Wonder if the NIKON or the sigma is sharper. The price ain't that much different.

The sharpness of the Sigma 85 1.4 is indeed very impressive, especially wide open.

I've got a couple of shots at f8 which shows sharpness in the frame - sadly because they were handheld they were taken at quite a high ISO so there is some noise (i haven't done any processing on them) and even this mutes some of the sharpness imo.

check out that small black spec in the top 3rd of the frame above the bench...

i actually think the sharpness wide open is certainly comparable to the wonderful 135L (must must give this lens some loving)

wide open, the Sigma 85 1.4 is actually noticably sharper than the Canon 85 1.2:

at the same aperture (f1.4) centre sharpness seems about equal whilst corner sharpness is certainly better on the Sigma.

but by f2 things are about equal, perhaps a little less CA on the Sigma:

It's a great lens.
