Yes
I am a canon user and during a trip to the hospital to see a friends baby.

Out pops a Nikon camera by another visitor, not sure which, it was quite small and plastic so assume along the same line as a 450d? Me being me trying to be nosy without being nosy lol..... Heard the shutter and I must say it sounded pretty sexy, better than my 50d.

Now this bugs me! Lol

yep, apparently you can mute it in the menu, it's just a sound effect.

Lol! I have a D700 and it does sound very nice indeed! And the low light is simply astonishing!!

Due. You want to hear the shutter on my Hasselblad. The Nikons get scared.

I always thought my 350D/550D 'snapped' and my D80 'crunched'.

I like the minimalist 'snip' shuttersound of the Leica M6, but the M8 goes 'snip-whirrrrrrrr', a little like those old fixed-focus film compacts. You can disconnect the 'whirr' from the 'snip' if you so choose to make it quieter, but it's still gotta 'whirrr' at some point.

Onamatopoeias, anyone?

Nikon cameras do have a nice 'clacky' shutter.
My 40D sounds a little more electronic. Have to say, it's never bothered me in the slightest.

My friends K20D sounds like a kalashnikov!

There was a photography TV programme on a while ago on CH5 with Suzi Perry, most of you have seen it and they faked the shutter noise of a DSLR with a horrible sounding noise like an electric whirring noise, damned horrible it was, almost Polaroid like.

Nothing like Rogering a Rollieflex :gag:

when i had pentax nikon sounded so quiet no i have nikons olympus id the the best ive heard(but still dont want one,
mind you the pentax k5 is quiet.

The dampened shutter on the E-1 is definitely one of the quietest shutters I've heard. It's funny how some people react to the shutter noise, a few years ago I was at a wedding with a DSLR when they were fairly rare in the hands of non-professionals. Many other guests were keen to take some pictures with the camera to hear a proper mechanical shutter rather than the usual sound effect on compacts and phones.

I'm disappointed the micro 4/3 cameras haven't been able to offer a silent electronic shutter mode as they have a noticeable shutter noise which isn't always preferable. The D700 has a real 'whack' which sounds pretty good unless you're trying to be quiet.

Canon shutters sound very "synthetic" whereas the Nikon makes a solid noise.

IMHO.

The 450D and other 000D models sound like a mouse being slapped. However, the 1Ds and 1D cause earthquakes every time the shutter goes, and is more akin to a "ka-chunk" ~rumble...

I've got a 30D as well and the shutter on that sounds very weak and lame - I've actually wondered whether it's knackered before now.

I thought 1000Ds made the same "eeeep" sound that 000ds do?

This thread has inspired me!

I have just decided to film the D3s at 9 and 11 FPS and I was shocked to find that at 9 FPS it hit 130 shots in less than 14 seconds! Not bad, put it in crop mode it polishes all 130 off in less than 12!!! :gag:

Videos are going up now will update you guys when they are up!

D60 sounded better than D300. :/

Tend to agree, but only on the basis of my olllld 350D, that sounded awfully synthetic. 40D a bit more 'manly' but not as pleasant as my friends Nikon :(
