...a Nikon 18-200 VR.

Hope its good cos I sold both my kit lens and 55-200! :|

My stepdad put that lens on his D200 once.

He's never taken it off!

I'm looking forward to getting it. I like to shoot lots of different stuff, so it will be handy having a long range of focal lengths in one lens - I felt changing lenses was a hinderance. :bonk:

It's a great lens that replaces the two you've sold. I've even managed a few good motorsport shots with it! :) I now have a 70-200 f2.8 and a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 on the way, though! :)

Its a great walkabout lens as already said. Its tends to stay on my camera whenever on holiday. The lens creep on mine does bug me sometimes.

Anyone have any problems with sharpness?

Do you leave the VR on or off, generally? It gets annoying with the image moving in the viewfinder, and sometimes I struggle to centre things up so I generally leave it off now and only switch it on if I need it.

A friend of mine bought that lens in December and hasn't stopped raving about it since. The pictures I have seen off it have been lovely and crispy sharp and when we were doing some dusk shooting he was at a distinct advantage on the lower shutter speeds!

Which kit lens did you have? The 18-70 is one of the best budget lenses you can buy IMO.

Not wanting to put a downer on this great lens, but I just sent mine back to Nikon for repair. Its almost 1 yr old and suffers from lens drop ( like creep but more rapid) and wont focus properly on AF.
BUT, while it was working it was on the camera all the time and produced excellent results.
To overcome the lens creep on many lenses, some people have fitted a rubber O ring or one of those charity bands over the zoom ring. Looks ugly but works.
Of course, yours may be one of the many that doesnt suffer from this, fingers crossed, but, to be honest, the lens is so good, the creep is just a minor annoyance. Cant wait to get it back!
Enjoy yours.
(I leave mine on VR normal all the time)

I had the 18-55 off of a D40x. It was a good lens, but I found it was not long enough.

What are lens creep and lens drop exactly? I have seen it mentioned before...And more importantly, how do you prevent it? Where would you put a rubber O'Ring? :help:

Lens creep is where the zoom automatically comes out when the lens is pointing down. The 18-200mm has had some fairly bad reports for this. Mine does it. some put the rubber band over where the two barrells join, helping to privide some resistance from creep.
I sent mine back under warranty for it. It came back exactly the same. Nikon even mentioned it on their website, saying it was acceptable.
Its the only thing that bugs me about this lens. I don't find it acceptable. Other than that, as allready said, great walkabout lens.
