As some of you may know I'm a cyclist and also commute in London by bike. If you have ever commuted in London, you'll know what it's like on the road out there - a sprawling mess of buses, taxis and white vans all out to knock you over. Not really all of them, but some days it feels like it! Needless to say, its dangerous and the stupidity of some drivers puts cyclists lives in danger.

Now I'm not looking to start a cyclist v motorists argument here, because I've also seen some pretty stupid cyclists out there as well. Just remember that cyclists have no protection - one bump by a vehicle and there's a very high chance you'll end up crippled or dead.

There is a point to all this and I'm getting there....

Passing distance by law in the UK is 3 feet or about a meter, so this means that when one vehicle passes another they should allow this distance between themselves and the vehicle they're passing - this also applies to motorists passing cyclists. If a car goes passed a cyclist who is riding on the left hand side of the road, they are in fact overtaking the cyclist and should follow the rules of the road - 3 feet passing distance. If there is only one lane in each direction, usually this means that the passing vehicle will have to swerve into the opposite direction lane in order to pass the cyclist. 95% of motorists probably understand this and follow this reasoning.

Today, while riding home, a scenario such as the one described above occurred, though the ape in the blue van who came close to killing me was unfortunately among the 5% of idiot drivers out there that couldn't grasp the fact that cyclists are people too. He passed me with literally millimeters between his side mirror and my head and was definitely not inside the speed limit of 30mph.

The ape had the misfortune to do this to me at the end of a day and week that felt like a balloon ready to pop. His error was my pin. I popped. Cranking my pedals very hard I managed to catch the van at a point in the road where he had to stop. I pulled in front of him and managed to explain to in short, sharp sentences between sucking in lungfuls of air why he was such a complete ****tard and would be better off pleasuring himself in a most vigorous way. The man, who looked like he had never read more than two words his entire, miserable life, reached over his passenger, grabbed something, opened his door and climbed out. It looked like he'd grabbed a plank of wood - some sort of relative more than likely - and was making his way toward me shouting something.

I wasn't about to stick around to get my head bashed in, so got my loose foot back into it's pedal and started pedalling, trying to get some distance between me and it. It was mostly downhill back to my house - about 1 and a half miles from the top of Hampstead, along the Bishops Avenue and then a good dig up a little hill and home. flying down toward the top of Bishops Avenue I snuck a quick look behind me and could see the blue van gaining on me rapidly - this guy meant business and I had a sickening feeling he was going to try and kill me. I was racing for my life....

My aim was to get down the Bishops Avenue as fast as possible and to try and get a few cars in between me and the van. I heard the roar of the van's engine as he accelerated right up to my rear wheel. Too late, I thought - time to die..... Instead of bashing my rear wheel, he pulled up longside me and swerved into me, but my survival instincts had already kicked in and I'd begun braking as soon as I anticipated his side swiping maneuver. He shimmied to the left in a move that was meant to end me, but I was moving up around the back of the van and then accelerating on his right hard. Up to 40mph I rode down the hill. I looked behind again and a car had moved between me and the van. The ape was hooting and flashing his lights for the car behind me to get out of his way - he wanted my blood and the taste of fear was in my mouth.

I darted to the left of another car and managed to get two between us. The traffic light was coming up and it was green. I flew over the crossing, turning left into the oncoming traffic lane, hopped the pavement and skidded to a stop. The van driver could do nothing except hoot and flash. He disappeared round the bend and I was standing on the pavement, soaked in sweat and shaking violently. I was alive. My god I had come inches away from certain death. On the last mile home I started laughing uncontrollably.

I won the race. And my life. Lessons to be learned.... yes, I probably should have just taken it on the chin and said nothing to the ape... just lay down and admit defeat. Turn the other cheek and all that....

But honestly, I'm glad I stood up for myself. Damn him to hell.

Registration....police. An attempt at running you off the road is extremely serious.

Pay some road tax and get insurance then I may consider cyclists..........:bat:

;)

I wished I'd been able to get his registration. I was too busy trying to stay alive.

Damn! Sounds like you had an interesting day then! Shame you couldn't get the plate, but report it anyway. You may know enough (time of day, location, description of vehicle, description of him) to warrent looking at CCTV in the area. All they need is a plate on CCTV and you're laughing. Report it.

Yes, report it, you've NOTHING to lose !!

Might I also suggest a new bike and set of cycling gear in case he hasnt finished with you !

I'm also a keen cyclist and have more than several times been cut up by these fools !!

Eejits

I should still report it, but I'm a few glasses into my Friday night right now, so I think I'll just laugh this off.

I have three bikes and several different cycling outfits, so I guess I'll keep a low profile for a few weeks... :suspect:

A mate of mine has a good solution to these idiots - he always rides with a helmet-cam and records every ride

A jif lemon filled with brake fluid.

by your own admission you brought on the drivers anger yourself by shouting abuse at him so this is one you'll just have to chalk up as experience IMO.

I commute just over 100 miles a day by bike (with an engine) that includes going through the centre of Bristol at rush hour morning and night, it is easy to get wound up at other people for not having your interests at the front of their mind but thats life, dont pick fights you cant win and you aint ever going to win against a tranny van.

I saw a learner on a 125 playing funny beggers with a 4x4 that was being driven aggresively a couple of days ago and he landed up swerving towards me, I showed him my carbon armoured knuckle and suggested it may be coming in his direction if he tried it again, I then had the advantage of being able to open the throttle and b****r off out of the way.

Amazing story and very well told - I cam imagine your frustration as I used to cycle from Brixton the city and to Putney many years ago - and there were as many idiots then as now! (and I do concede there are idiots on two wheels as well as on 4 and on foot!)

Glad you survived it!!!

You should write books or something :D That had me on the edge of my seat!

Seriously though, sounds like you messed with the wrong van driver. Glad you came out of it in one piece.

.

i disagree completely with the above ,,a van driver should have other road users interests at the front of their minds ,,cyclists and pedestrians especially , i'll bet if mr knob head van driver had a 44ton truck coming towards him he would soon get out the way .

I know where you're coming coming from, my (ex?) g/f has had 3 accidents on her bike in the last 3 years, all of which have been caused by idiots pulling out in front of her and not looking for a motorbike.

Although I must admit, on the flip side of this, the other day I got the angry treatment for nearly killing a cyclist, only problem was, I was pulling out of a traffic light controlled t-junction with my lights on green and they came barrelling down the road at 30mph and jumped the red light!

I'd be reporting it to the police, it doesn't matter how angry you got with them, trying to kill somebody with a van is not a valid response!

Well told story btw.

I am often reprimanded by Mrs G for tooting or flashing when on the receiving end of bad driving by others.
After reading the op she immediately said " You see what can happen,I keep telling you it is just not worth it" I know she is right after reading this example of road rage.

Well done for sticking up for yourself. I would have done the same. And as for the chase, well if your not living life on the edge then your taking up too much room.

Helmet cam is a good idea, but remember that you also got to abide by every law as its on camera. No good moaning to the plod and handing in a tape with a catalogue of law breakers by yourself!!

A compressed air horn could be used as a distress signal. I never seem to have my MP3 recorder with me when it counts.

I once reprimanded the driver of a horsebox when he'd parked outside a shop after passing me unsafely. He then passed me on the outskirts of the village and was out of the cab giving me an earful in no time. I'm sure the locals would've taken his side.

On a couple of occasions I've reported truck fleets to the police and then found myself tailed when I've left town on the way home. The majority of truckers are great, and one blocked the busy road a friend commutes along, after he'd had an accident due to equipment failure.

Yes, I should have just let him run me over as punishment to myself.

Sorry for this answer, but that seems to be the logic you're using here.

Yeah, I wouldn't want them to see the time I purposefully tried running a double decker bus over with my bicycle now would I?

EDIT: again, nothing personal, but I wouldn't automatically assume I'm a law breaker...

Ekimeno, I get where you're coming from, being a motorcyclist and now I work on the motorway so even when crossing the road, you get some van drivers revving thier engines or accelerating very fast after the lights have changed and those pricks get what they deserve and from what you stated, its a very serious offence trying to run you off the road,

I think you should report it and your route and I'm sure they'd have some footage somewhere, think about it this way, he missed you today but what if he hits another cyclist tommorow?
