As per title really, I have a 50D and a 1Ds (classic), I dont have a need for two bodies and am quite happy with a crop camera.. Is it worth selling both and getting a 7D?? Wouldnt cost me much/anything, other than the hassle of selling 2 bodies.

I have the following lenses at my disposal:

Samyang 8mm Fisheye
Canon EF-s 17-55mm f2.8 IS
Canon EF 24-105mm F4 IS L
Canon EF 70-200mm F4 L
Canon EF 50mm F1.8 Mk1
Canon EF 100mm F2.8 Macro

Am considering selling either the 17-55 or the 24-105 as well, as they do basically the same job.

Mainly shoot Macro and Portrait, but am trying to learn landscape and shoot the odd bit of motorsport (maybe 4-5 times a year).

So, if you were me, what would you do?

**EDIT - Then the thought of a 5D Mark II enters my head.. If I sell the 17-55 EF-S then I dont need to put much/any cash in for that upgrade...

Thanks,
Sam

Since nearly all of your togging is static or nearly static: 5D2

Thanks for that, can you expand on that as to why?

what I belive he meant is that since you mostly do MAcro and portraits, you dont need the high speed of a 7d while the 5D excels especially at portraits due to its full frame. 5D is slower but that doesnt mean its not capable of shooting motorsport for 4 times a year.

7d excels in motorsport, sport, wildlife and other fast action tography.

5d excels in portraits still lif, macro, landscape and so on (unless macro you are trying to shoot down a fly)

Saying that both cameras are very able bodies and the examples above is to differentaite and not the rule.

Remember that 5d will be replaced end of year begining of next. 7D maybe a bit later

5D2 picture quality is better than 7D. The big advantage the 7D has is the better autofocus system which comes into its own if you are using AI Servo mode. For static subjects, there isn't much difference between the two in focusing, so the 5D2 wins in better image quality.

You'll probably also want a wider lens at some point if you're doing landscape.

I agree that the 5DmkII has the edge for image quality (the fact that you can shoot at ISO 3200 and not need any NR is amazing) the 7D is excellent too. I reckon that the 7D has a real advantage for macro, it has some gizmo that alters the way it AFs when shooting macro. I compared macros taken with a 40D and a 7D and the 7D was so much better, the focus was much more consistent and the images had a real edge (can't quite put my finger on what it is about them). Also the crop factor effectively gives you a longer working distance for macros which can help if shooting insects. For me the 5DmkII is the better choice for portrait work and the 7D for macros... but both are excellent so you can't go far wrong.

Ok, so pro's and con's for going either way.. The 5d II isnt cheap, and I am struggling mentally with spending that sort of cash on a new body.

The other option for me is to sell the 1Ds, sell the 24-105L and spend the money on something else entirely! (but where is the fun in that ;) )

I agree - if it was me I'd go for the 5Dmkii. Infact I did sell my 50D for one. You could then sell the 50D and the 17-55 as the 24-105 makes an ideal walkaround lens on full frame. You could also sell the 1Ds as it would probably become redundant with a 5D.

You'll get an improvement in IQ, DOF and noise. For macro you'll need to get in closer for the same framing, or frame looser if you're at 1:1 on the 100mm but I dont find this to be a problem and with 21MP you've got plenty of scope for cropping. I havent used mine for motorsport yet, but like you its only something I do occasionally - the AF on the 5D wont be as good as the 7D but theres plenty of decent motorsport shots around taken with the 5D
