Looking to buy either a very good walkabout or a telephoto lens, birding/avaition ect within the budget ive got....walkabout i was thinking 17-55 2.8 IS, but aviation

Any idea's

Andy

If your keeping your 70-200 you could perhaps buy a 1.4 extender to add a little bit extra reach?

I think you really need at least 300mm for aviation, and the faster the better.

24-105 L if you don't mind sacrificing a bit of wideness, for a walkabout.

Or how about a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and a 1.4tc? (for aviation and birds) Without the TC you get a nice telephoto range (esp. on a crop body) and fast glass and with the TC you still have a respectable speec (it will become f/4 I think) with even more reach.

Don't know what they go for, and I know it isn't that fast, but have you looked at the 100-400mm L?

I think they sell for around £900 used, they call the 100-400 the airshow lens ive heard......

That's a very specific amount, Andy!

Sigma 70-200 2.8 with tc sounds interesting, but how much you looking at for both used? does it retain the af with the tc attached?

If you look at camerpricebuster you can get the sigma 70-200 for £550 new. That leaves you around £115 for the tele converter which seem to go for around that second hand.

i just picked up a 100-300 f/4 ex dg sigma for £650, perfect for what i need (rallying, racing and aviation/loop)

Am i right in thinking this, if i went for a siggy 70-200 2.8 with 1.4tc, on my 40d the siggy at 200mm end would give me 320mm f2.8 with the 1.6x crop factor of the 40d then plus the 1.4tc would give me 448mm

448 f/4 ff equivilant yes, 300 + 1.4x = 420 + crop (1.6) = 672mm ff equiv

Thats not a bad range with the tc is it, will it retain af? it will also become an f4 wont it? Hows image quality effected with the tc attached?

ANDY

Yes, the Sigma will retain AF even with a 2x TC attached, certainly with a 1.4

I don't own a Sigma myself but I am saving up for one. IQ is supposed to be very good I believe. Yes, it will become f/4 when used with a TC.

Well my mind is starting to sway towards the siggy 2.8 + 1.4tc, decisions, decisions, decisions

I have been after the lens for a while now, it sounds really good, few people have anything bad to say about it.

Has anyone got any examples of shops with the sigma 70-200 2.8 and also with the 1.4tc attached?

thanks

Hi. Why not the Canon EF 400/5,6 L USM ? if you want a long, light and L series lens for birds and avionics also cheaper than 100-400.
