I just can't focus today!

For the last couple of months our family dog has been struggling with what we assumed to be age, he's a twelve year old Brambledale Bearded Collie (the family lines normal life expectancy is 15yrs 'ish).

A month ago he took a severe turn and thanks to some superb vets, an ultra sound and bone marrow biopsy it was discovered that he needed a splenoctomy which he pulled through and it was if he was a pup again and back to his old self so everyone breathed a sigh of relief!

Yesterday he didn;t apepar to be his normal self and this morning was extremely short of breath and was having severe problems moving around, as he lives with my folks they've taken him to the vets where he has been for the last four hours! I hate the waiting game as mum was concerned this could be 'the last trip'...

As time goes on thoughts turn to the worst and I hate not knowing whats going on, I hope he pulls through but at the same time if this is going to become a monthly thing is it kinder to end it here for him....

Why am I posting I don't know, fingers just flowing over the keyboard so apologies for a random post.

Always a worrying time Ryan.
You (or your parents) will know when the time is right sadly.
Of all the dogs we have owned (over 30 - we still have 19 - don't ask) only one has died 'naturally' and that wasn't thru' old age. Norma, a Papillon, didn't look very well one morning, so we took her down the Vet immediately. She was diagnosed with a heart problem and was given medication. We never had a chance to give her any as she died at lunchtime.

These things happen and unfortunately the dog can't tell you how it feels.
You just have to try to do what you think is best.

All the best.

Thanks Taz,

After four hours and numerous tests Taffy's red blood cell count is dangerously low and somethng is fighting his immune system, he's having a blood transfusion this evening and we'll see how things go tomorrow, fingers crossed and a long night ahead.

Good luck Ryan, Fingers crossed for Taffy.

I think Taz has summed it up perfectly, its always a worrying time, the dog can't tell you how it feels. All you can do is do what feels right and prevent it suffering any more than is necessary.

We went through a similar thought process several years ago with our 14 year old Yorkshire Terrier. In the end, when the time is right, you know.

Some of the worst times you can experience as a pet owner. Even knowing this we put ourselves through it all time and time again.

This is because we love our pets and the bonds we form with each one. That bond is the one that will let you know when it's time. A heartbreaking decision to make, but it feels right when you do.

I will never forget going to the vets with my beloved Honey after watching her struggle through months of ups and downs health wise. Even right at the moment she barked at the vet that night, I could have changed my mind because she appeared normal and not in pain like she was just moments before. But I stuck with my decision and was there to comfort her in her last minutes. We discovered later that if we had changed our minds she would have endured a very painful few hours before exiting this earth on her own. I am glad that I saved her that pain :)

I hope the transfusion works it's magic for your Taffy, and you get another good few years with him yet. But if the worst happens you have a choice to make that could enable you to give him one last gift for all of those glorious years he has given you.

Much love to you, your family and Taffy. xxx

Fingers crossed for you and  , I've been through this recently myself losing my 12yo old soul mate to heart failure in January, hope all goes well for you boy

 My thoughts are with you and Taffy, Ryan.

We lost Luke about 18 months ago. Taking him for that last trip to the vets was the hardest thing I've ever done but I know that it was the right thing for him . . . it doesn't stop it hurting though.

I really hope that the blood transfusion works out - I'll be thinking about him tonight. Let us know how he gets on.

Thanks Sarah, he's in good hands which is the only reassurance we have at the mo...

He's a stubborn old fool which should hopefully help, he went to our local vets this morning where it looked like the kindest thing to do was make the final decision but an option was put on the table and of he went to the specialists in Winchester. Typical Taff as soon s he arrived the eyes light up as if to say don;t you bloody dare, I'm not done yet!

We'll find out in the morning whether he's accepted the new blood and how things will go from here so it's going to be a long old night and morning.

Hope today's the day for good news on Taff Ryan.

Hope taff makes it Ryan.
Been in that situation too many times. It's hard, very hard.

hoe is Taff doing ??
Its so horrid when our pets are ill
huge hugs

Hey Ryan, just seen this, hope Taffy is comfy and well.

As I was writing a message on here the phonecall came through to say he had made it through the night and actually managed some fodo this morning which is somewhat promising although he is still in a very bad way...

He's now healthy enough to go through some tests as noone actually knows whats wrong with him at the moment and still not 100% whether he'll be coming home which ios absolute agony...

Really don't feel like being in the office and six o'clock can't come early enough as I'll be shooting straight over to the folks (hopefully to spend some time with Taff)!

It's going to be a long day, thank you for the messages they do mean a lot when you've got other things on your mind....

Sound like a right wet don't I!!!!

Feel for you, mate! I know all about it!

The only consolation I can offer is that Taffy is far less emotionally upset by today than all his people are and if he wanted some breakfast, that's always good

Fingers crossed for you and Taffy Ryan and at least you have the consolation of knowing he is in the best place possible and between you all, you can make the decisions about where things go from and make it all very easy for him, whatever happens. Dogs are loved and lucky like that :)

Sorry to hear about this hope Taffy pulls through.....its the waiting that's so awful! having lost my dog, mother, horse, cat in the last few consectuve years I can understand the horrible time you are going through.

Fingers crossed all is well and Taffy is on the mend soon !

Sound like a right wet don't I!!!!

No you don't. You just sound like somebody who cares about their dog.
Glad to hear that there was some improvement last night - and if he wanted to eat this morning that has to be a good thing.

Here's hoping that the tests show up something that can be dealt with. Fingers crossed for you, and let's hope that 6 o'clock comes round quickly.

Slightly relieved and some weight has been lifted from my shoulders :)

It appears although we won't know 100% until Tuesday that Taff's been diagnosed with Babesia, a rare tick disease which he more than likely picked up years ago when we lived in Hong Kong. The reason it has only just come to light is that the antibodies are produced by the spleen whih he had out 3 weeks ago!

He's going on the meds now which have a 95% success rate but things are looking good and as usual with Taff we've been worrying ourselves silly with no reason! I wish all animals myself included were as strong as this old boy :)

Just a wait now until Sunday when he should be able to come home :)

Soryr for the bizarre post froma relative noob on the forums but thanks for the messages, must spend to much time on here and needed somewhere to vent...

Unfortunatley since have the DSLR I haven't had a chance to get out with him and take some photo's but here's Taff (excuse the crap shots) from a P&S...

He's always been on to let his hair down...

He's always had a bit of an artistic flare, must be the breed!

Glad to hear you've got some good news

Pets are more than just 'animals', they're family members, so no you didn't sound daft at all!

Very good news. Hope he gets sorted out with suitable medication.

Many thanks again, will be heading over after work although am now able to think straight again so roll on 6pm. Will have a play with Bailey whose wondering where his big brother is a tthe mo and then should be able to pick him up and bring him home tomorrow :)

Must try get photo's although for tomorrow Taffy won't be much in the mood for modelling I would imagine lol...

Think Taffy's bill so far this year is just about to tip the £7k mark :'(:bang:

At the end of the day you can't put a price on someones head and will do anything you can to help them out and happy...

Thanks again...

Was woken up at 7am this morning by Bailey wondering where his big brother was, he's been whining a bit this week which is to be expected. We got the call to say he was OK to come home so after taking Bailey for a quick walk jumped in the car and of the the vets.

He's now home and apart from being a bit lethargic from the anemia has perked up imensley (can't spell lol). He was more than happy enough to have a mold taken of his nose as a friend of mine will be turning it into silver (photo's and weblink at a later date) but it's great to see him back on his feet!

Even managed to grab some photo's which I'll add when I've sorted them out :)

A very happy bunny :)

Sorry Sarah, I should have said they're Bailey his younger brother, I only managed to get one photo of Taffy in the back garden and it was quite blurred as I rushed a shot so I could get on and give him a cuddle which he was gagging for!

Will get some picks of the old boy up when he's back on his feet properly :)

Baileys shots were taken this morning. I might have to shave him as trying to get all the hair in focus at the same time is a nightmare!

Sorry Sarah, I should have said they're Bailey his younger brother,

 You did say!
Now I've looked again I can see that you wrote "Bailey in the sun" at the top of the post - I just missed it first time round. :bonk:

He's a beautiful boy though, and I'm looking forward to seeing some more of Taff when he's well again.

Will get tham up as soon as he's upto talking a walk, he's a big ball of straggly fluff at the mo (imagine the worst hair day possible) and rather than have a stunning head of hair looks like a poodle where he now has all four of his legs partly shaved due to the splenectomy and blood transfusion so more like a poodle gone wrong !

Aw lovely pics .. they are great dogs I remember as a really young kid our neighbour had 2 and tbh thats all I remember about them was their two huge cuddley dogs and playing with them lol

Don't be daft about caring for your animals .. they manage to work themselves in very close to peoples hearts and don't even realise it!

Glad all that worry is looking brighter!
