Yes
They charge you extortionate fees for doing pretty much nothing, and then when someone pays you they tell you they are holding YOUR money for 21 days or until the buyer has left feedback.

Do you think you could go into Jessops and say I will take this camera and then pay for it when I am happy or if I havent complained after 21 days??

And its cr*p whne they say its to provide the buyer with assurances, more like a way of Paypal sitting on what could be millions for 21 days and claiming a nice bit of interest on top of the already scandalous fees they charge.

Bloody joke!

Why cant someone come up with an alternative to Paypal, charge say half the current fees and they would still make a bloody killing. I would go down the route of saying direct bank transfer only on Ebay but too many people are so wary thinking its some way of conning them!

Oh well rant over now.....

They charge, what is it?. 3% ? to transfer funds into your account.

It takes a year to earn 3% in a savings account!!!!!

Not allowed now as you must offer paypal or they will pull your auction listing!

I would have thought that is one for the monopolies commission
( well it bloody well should be!)

You can still offer any form of payment in the listing but it must include Paypal.

its a joke because pay pal own e bay and vice verser lol spelt that wrong they can do what the hell they like

also e bay are now charging stupid fees to list your items in a shop ie was £6.00 a month now £15.00 a monthe 10p a listing without the 5p gallery fee and now the gallery fee is free but the listing is now 20p how the hell does that work its more like a extra 10 p for a photo

pay pal and e bay are getting too gready because they know they can get away with it
shame e bay and pay pal was once good to deal with

If you think Paypal's extortionate, go find out how much your bank would charge you to accept online payments (or companies like protx etc)

I use Paypal because it's convenient, and it suits me. Although PaulMack, I can see why they implemented the 21-day thing, and you'll see it's for high-value, normally electronic items that have been the target of scams in the past. It's another layer of security, and if you need the money quicker, sell it somewhere else...

At the end of the day, eBay and Paypal are businesses, offering services. They exist to make a profit at the end of the day like every other business. If you don't like the price a business charges, you go look elsewhere for it cheaper...

To receive online payments would be free if the buyer were to quite simply make a bank transfer, which many many people on here prefer.

Ebay have quite literally cornered the market and made it so that pretty much everybody has to use them if they want to get a sale on their used items. When it started it was cheap and they never took a final value fee so everybody used it. As time has gone by they have slowly but surely increased their takings and they are now in a position that you cant really use anything else. Take the loot for example, who reads the Loot nowadays? and who thinks to check the Loot when they want to buy anything? They dont they go straight to Ebay, so as a seller you must use Ebay.

The holding payment for 21 days doesnt make sense to me because the majoirty of scammers that hit ebay are actual buyers not sellers, so why punish the seller? And even after that the buyer has extra protection with Paypal in so much that they can always raise a dispute and Paypal gives them their money back whether the seller likes it or not. It is quite simply a tactic to hold onto money for an extended period in my opinion, one without justification.

I agree that both paypal and ebay are businesses and they do need to make a profit but the fees are so disproportionate. They take a standard percentage regardless, so its 3.4% whether you sell something for £3 or £300 yet their services provided are not better the greater the value to justify it.

Ebay is a very successful and profitable company that does not need to prey on its client like they do. They have made themselves a monopoly and pretty much do as they like as they go about it.

the charges are a tad annoying but then the service Paypal offers is extremely versatile and useful (one of the few 'universal payment options' that is actually getting penetration in online stores IMO) so I can't really complain. I'd prefer this than having to send my card details to however so many different sites I've done transactions with that used paypal

There's Google checkout, only drawback is that your customers etc must open an account which some people don't want to do...must admit that whilst Paypal isn't perfect it allows many people to make sales that they'd never do without it !!

I dont disagree, as buyer Paypal is great...its Free!!

But when you are selling and incur their fees thats when you get fed up.

The point was made regarding accept credit card payments to your bank account not bank transfers. ;)

This has come up here before, Paypal don't hold onto every seller's money, they only do it if their account or the transaction have raised red warning flags, for example if the seller has previous feedback for non-delivery.

Well I have a very clear account on Ebay with not a single bad feedback and have had this happen a few times so I have to disagree there!

combined paypal and ebay take about 10% of what you sell things for.
annoying and a bit pricey...but if you were to go to a stall and sell your wares...antiques for example...you would lose a much great cut than 10%

i've had no probs with paypal etc so far except when they kept charging me money for receiving payments because I accidentally upgraded my account once to a pro user...bah

Here's a quote from the previous thread (edited only to remove the personal details)

"Thanks for contacting PayPal. I appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your questions. I understand that you are enquiring regarding the payment that you have received which is being on hold. Please allow me to apologize on behalf of eBay for the inconvenience this has caused you. I have provided you the information below for your further understanding. Your payments will not be held if you meet all the following requirements: Your eBay tenure is more than 6 months. Your eBay feedback rating more than 100. Your buyer dissatisfaction is less than 5%. Or if you meet all the following requirements: Your Detailed Seller Rating is greater than 4.5. Total Detailed Seller Ratings Received: More than 20 in the last 12-months."

Does any of that apply to your Ebay account?

This is a very good point...I also sell framed prints etc at galleries and typical commission is 30%...Paypal allows me to access a very wide customer base through my website with much lower charges...I appreciate that it's no fun when you've had bad experiences but personally I'm more than happy to pay for the increased opportunities that paypal provides...don't forget all the recent press regarding the main stream financial institutions who are certainly doing no-one any favours

that seller ratings thing is easy to fall foul of, mine dropped 2 points in about 5 sales because the buyers were unhappy that the post charge was £2 more than the actual cost, they seemed to ignore the jiffy bag which cost £1 + the time and petrol to take it to the PO and they fact they had it in their hand 18 hours after winning the auction, muppets
