No, really I do... and yes I know that's being very sensationalist aaaaaaand yes, I can even hear the voice of Jeremy Clarkson as I type this. It doesn't change the fact that I do hate it. I used it for the first time this evening since september last year. I didn't mean to use it, I just ended up going for a walk and forgot I'd unloaded the car of choices 1, 2 and 3.
So, since I hate the thing so much, the solution is easy right?
...... Wrong! You see it's not that simple (yes I know but I thought I just carry on preaching in the style of JC)
I do hate the thing, I really do but I also love it. The trouble with it is that it's just too good.... and at the same time it's not good enough. I'd forgotten just how great a machine it is to use, having become used to a 5D. The feel of all the switches and buttons is sublime, the sensitivity of the shutter button is perfect. The focusing is sooooo sweet and the sound of the shutter....... ahhhhh, it makes the 5D sound like semolina being fired at a wall in slow motion. It's just so precise in every way, a tool crafted to perfection.
But in terms of image quality, the 5D beats it in just about every way measurable and a few that aren't.
You see in the days when photography was generally practiced without a safety net, you could take a very good camera and very bad one and get the same result. As long as the film and the lens were the same, you could make up the difference with some good work.
In the digi age, the better camera will always be the better camera and that's that. The 5D will always produce a better quality file than the mk II and no amount of loving the feel of a button or sound of a shutter will ever change that.
So, what does the future hold for my poor old 1? I've no idea, other than to say it's in trouble for reminding me why I love it so much, when I can't justify using it over the 5.
It did get a small workout, just to blow the cobwebs out.
.....and why do people go out on these golf courses in the worst weather yet there was no-one there on the best evening of the year.... by far.?
