After been using a medium format camera for almost a year I can't like photos taken with a DX camera. They are sharp and colourful but they look some kind of "plastic" for me.

I was considering to buy a Fuji x100 (perharps even still considering :)) as a portable camera but I'm sure even if it is good in each aspect it is still DX.

DX was fine for me when I started.

I had D40, D200, D80, D90. I remember I couldn't see a diference between a photo taken with DX and FX cameras. I could understand better ISO sensitivity of FX cameras but apart from that photos taken with DX even looked sharper for me.

I was quite happy when I udgraded my camera from DX to FX but I wouldn't say that I noticed imidiately how much better ("more realistic") are photos from FX.

But finally after using MF now I can see a difference between DX and FX straigh away.

All the written above is just my personal opinion and of course I can be wrong in some aspects.

I decided to share my experience and advice to people who are considering a choice of a camera. If an FX camera is affordable based on your budget go for it. Don't go for DX unless you take photos of birds or of the moon.;)

And yes... Finaly - when do MF sensors become more affordable? as I can't wait to buy a good MF digital system. Perharps I should find a new job to afford one of the latest Sinars digital backs :)

As I said at the beggining I hate MF because now I feel like I'm addicted to it!
Unfortunately my friend followed my experience and he bought a cheap MF camera. After using this camera for few weeks he finally sold it but he also sold his D90 and is buying an FX camera and trying to save money for a new MF system as well.

P.S. ***Be careful!!! Don't see portfolio of this person if you don't have enough funds to afford an MF camera***.

Excellent.

some of those shots are stunning, but his use of light and colour is also totally amazing. i'm not convinced that these shots can only be made on MF, but then again, I could never take these shots not matter what camera i was holding.

Exactly - incredible shots but all could have been taken on a FF camera.

Of course the difference comes when they are enlarged and MF can certainly give much better quality than even FF at very large sized pictures.

.

Jaw dropping images. Really enjoyed looking at those. Thanks for sharing.

His work is amazing and that is probably an understatement. I would say great lighting and staging play the most important part in his creation. MF is just the medium he records the images on, and I don't see a reason why a good FF camera couldn't do that. MF won't do the light setup or anything - photographer does.

I don't see why a decent crop couldn't do it either.

I don't understand this thread, mainly because the grammar is crazy....*

Some very good commercial photography in that link but as said, nothing that any half-decent digital crop sensor couldn't capture. Good lighting seems to be the key to his work....

*(I take it Konstantin's first language isn't English so I'll let him off ;))

It's also about dynamic range. As far as I know (please correct me if I'm wrong) the best SLR cameras can only record 75% of what MF sensor can "see".
Amazing work.

MUST DO BETTER.

Some amazing shots there in that link. I really need to improve, I need a teacher!

The best we have at DSLR level is the FF. Glad I have one!

But I agree with points made, that although you get a certain 'PTING!' with a medium format, the setup, the lighting, the direction, the processing is all down to the excellent work of the photographer. Thanks for sharing this gentlemens work and sorry I couldnt contribute to the OP.
