Something is niggling in the back of my mind that i should move from my Nikon D300 to a Canon 50D.

This is mainly due to canons lens line up 24-105, 70-200 f4, to name just 2

Has anyone else done this, am i ****ed, should i do it, or should i stick as i am.

Do it Monkey, if YOU think its the best move yourself, then you should make the Jump.

How invested are you in Nikon?

The lenses are great, but I'd be looking at used 5D, not a 50D.

That will be significantly better in IQ that the D300, the 50D will probably be a downgrade in IQ from the D300 - although the lenses will make up for that to a large extent. I can't imagine anyone oggling a 50D though coming from a D300 personally, although I see the appeal of the glass.

Those two lenses wouldn't be enought tempt me into the financial hastle if I were you.

Hmmm, hadnt actually thought of the 5D, as it seems quite old now, but the Full frame would be an advantage for my landscape type shots.

Do you think the 50D IQ is off from the D300, i personally imagined them to be the same.

I was also contemplating the 40D, leaving a bit more to spend on glass

Could you afford to buy the camera BEFORE selling your current crop of stuff?
If so, might be an idea to purchase the Canon first and then if you dotn like it, sell it for a little less then you paid for it?

I also agree with PD. Maybe have a look at either a 1d series or the 5d he suggests. I cant wait till i can afford a 1dmkII :(

I have to admit that i do love my 40d, and i dont know how the 40d compares to the 50d. I have heard that you need better glass on a 50d then a 40d due to the higher res. Enter Canon Bob..... :)

Kind of, i can buy it on my credit card, then sell my crop stuff before the payment is due, if i time it right thats nearly 2 months

intersting point, after all 15mp is alot to cram into a 1.6 crop

Before interest is usually 56 days if that what you meant? Even a months interest wouldnt hit you too hard...But yes, that would be my advice

And thats only what i have heard. So if you were buying a 50d, then you would need the better glass asap. But wouldnt a 40d be a step back from a d300? I'm not sure on the Nikon line-up really

yeah thats what i mean, time it just after statement date, so its on the following statement a month later, with nearly a month to pay in full with no interest, as you say its 56 days

I dont think there is a huge difference in it really, they were both available at the same time, the 50D was released recently to be more in line with the D300.

I think everyone has their own opinion as to which is better, and its probably more personal preference than true specification.

Yeah, that is also true, and i guess if there is a difference then i doubt it is massive.
Well, the choice is down to you Monkey :)

A 50D doen't need better glass than a 40D but it can make more use of it. If you take the same shot with both cameras & print it at A4 it will look the same but if you take advantage of the 15M pixels to crop then it could show up limitations with the lens.

If you imagine a lens as having say 10M pixels resolution then it would be wasted on a 15M pixel body (at least thats how I look at it)

I think that's a pretty good summary.
