I had a quick go on new Apple 27" screen today at work... it is 27" but runs on 2560-by-1440 resolution! nice...
At the moment I run 24" dell with 1900@1200 ...
For a while now I was thinking about 30" dell as it is beautiful piece of kit but price scares me off!!

I could get apple screen for only £749 so not as much as 30" from dell that is over £1k !!

but again do I need new screen ? mine is lovely...
colours on apple looked to warm for me, over saturated you could say...

this colour difference between apple and mine dell made me look for screen calibration device and as it is only around £60 mark it is better choice than spending £750 !

so once again...I do not need new screen, I do not need a new screen !!


P.S while looking on lcd prices I saw that I could get iPad £70 cheaper then normal price and I want it as well ;D

Get a calibrator first.

You'll end up needing one anyway.
 
I wish they'd quit this glossy screen nonsense. I get eye strain sitting in front of a glossy screen due to reflections ( used to have the same thing with CRT's ) so they're no good to me at all. If they did a matte screen option I'd be all over that new 27"

Are these massive screens really that good an idea? Dont you get distortion if you're sat too close... i.e. normal desktop environment.

personally i run 2x 22" dell IPS panels that combined can cost less than half of the apple screen mentioned in the OP.. much better setup in terms of real estate and usable area in my opinion.
 
If its newer and shinier, then you NEED it. This is very important. Shiney, shiney...
 
Having tried BOTH multiple screens and very large screens there are advantages to both of them. I am a big fan of the 30" monitors which have a higher resolution still than these 27" monitors. The advantage of dual screens is the clear distinction between the screens so you can have say Lightroom running on one screen and set the other as a preview screen (which works well with tethering). Now if I can get the new 27" screen via education then claim the VAT back through the business ...........
 
One problem with the Apple screens is calibrating them. They don't have controls to adjust white point, brightness etc. This is normally done via the adjustments set up options within OSX. . Screen calibration software with some devices can help, especially with brightness but not all can.

I'd opt fro a calibration device first .You'll probably see a major improvement with this.

If you need more real estate for images, opt for a cheaper monitor to sit alongside you 24". This will be a cheaper option.

I have a 27" iMac and the additional real estate does make a difference. However I only opted for the Mac as I needed a new computer and it was the better option. ( And cheaper than the Mac Pro option I was considering. ).

Glossy screens can be a problem in some environments, but proper positioning eliminates any problems
 
Lukas, which model of Dell monitor do you have? I have a 2407wfp which calibrates fantastically on the Mac Pro.

paid a small fortune for it when it came out :)

I think I will get spyder3 express to calibrate it :)

They are a great monitor when calibrated, like I said I have one and have no problems with it.
 
How much off your togging kit did you really need ? Want is enough !
If you want it, then sometimes you need it !
 
did anyone here used spyder 3 express ?
 
I use a Huey Pro which I find does the job well.

Got the Elite version as part of the StudioSR kit. Calibrates my 2209WA very nicely.
