Just spotted a coal wagon in our street, with rows of sacks of coal on the back of it. An even stranger sight, a coal man / coal person, with a sack of coal over their shoulder. A strange sight, seeing a person wearing a donkey jacket, lumping a sack of coal down the road.

Before anyone else says it, ( gets a sly dig in) it is up north. :)

PS

I don't suppose this was the traditional coal, but rather the modern equivalent.

We've still got a few down here in Cornwall too - could be the same guy too in his donkey jacket which I don't suppose sell in their thousands these day..

So it's not just a northern thing. :)

We had the Alpine wagon up this end. Spoilt for choice... Cream soda, Dandelion and burdock was the best. ;)

Loads of coal men round here, they still even dig it out the ground for you too.

We still have a Creamline Dairy Electric Milk Float down our street daily!

Eeee...I'll tell you what, the policemen round our way are getting younger and younger these days....and the coins are so fiddly....eee, I'll go to the foot of our stairs!!

....and you could buy 'em loose in those days....eee!

....and what's with all this clatter-bang rap music that they have nowadays....eee...you can't even hear the words, eee....and the language!..eee!

:D

Nope not seen any in our area for a long time, must be the 90s last time I saw a milkman/ milkwoman. Sad times, but milkie just can't compete with supermarkets. :(

Elderly lady across the street from me still has milk delivered on the float each morning too.

We still have one here in deepest Sussex, used to deliver my coal when I lived in the house and still see him about.
Nice chap, when we had a load of snow and he couldn't get the lorry out for delivery to us on the due date he
let us go over and get coal for ourselves and a couple of elderly neighbours

This threads missing something... Can't put my finger on it....hmm needs a... a ??

We have Milk and More (DairyCrest) delivering milk 3 times per week in our area....actually much nicer than supermarket milk so we don't mind paying the premium.

It was not our choice to stop getting milk off the milkman / woman, they stopped delivering. We and only a couple of others in our street got milk, so it was no longer cost effective for him. :(

Our milkman (going back over twenty years ago) was a right git!!
He always used to cut across our front garden as a shortcut to deliver milk to our neighbours....so much so that he wore a path across the lawn!
We politely asked him not to, but he continued.
Plus he would insist on leaving our milk at our back door, and never shut the gate afterwards....lost count of the times we would have to go door to door to retrieve our escaped doggie!
Then there was the fact that our village was last on his rounds, so our milk was delivered at lunchtime, and when we got home in the summer evenings, it was warm and sometimes rancid....the foil tops had occasionally burst too!

He tried to rip us off occasionally too, saying we'd had 3 pints instead of our usual 2....we never had 3 pints in all time we had milk delivered!

The final straw was when we wanted to postpone our milk delivery due to going on holiday....well, he went ballistic!!
He swore at my mum, and blamed her for damaging his business etc! S'pose we should have just let the milk pile up on the doorstep....rotting!!:D

I know this behaviour isn't representative of all milkmen and women, but it certainly soured our opinion!!
(Hehe....see what I did there?!)

**Phew**

Sorry about the rant, feels good to get that off my chest!

On a side note I recall our Saturday treat of the half pint of orange juice delivered by the milkie (yes, it was in a half pint glass bottle with a green foil top) and a Tunnocks Caramel bar. Certainly something I looked forward to and I still love the Caramel bars 55+ years later :)

Dandelion and burdock was my fav, my mouth is salivating now.
My dad used to make our own Dandelion and Burdock. Can't drink the bought stuff now.

I remember them too, how times change. :)

There are still 26 open cast coal mines in operation in the UK, producing around 7 million tons of coal a year.
We still get a milk float come up our road at around five in the morning.

Mind you, it is a long time since I saw a lorry delivering dandelion and burdock, cream soda and Vimto pop to our road, and then giving money back for the empties. And it does seem a very distant memory, when I recall the guy with a horse and cart, sharpening knives, shears and lawnmower blades - those were the days:)

We used to have a guy that travelled with a horse and cart, had permission to camp in a field next to the river, did odd jobs around the village,
pleasant chap, never caused any trouble, really helpful.
Always left the field as he found it, clean and tidy
Then one year a load of New Age travellers moved into the field with him, old vans ,caravans etc,, he'd only been they a few days
but moved on saying he didn't want to be associated with them, sadly he never returned :(
Wish I could say the new lot were the same, when the eventually moved on they left loads of rubbish behind

I was really surprised amazed even, when I saw that coal wagon and a coalman. I was kicking myself, I did not have my camera with me.

we still get pop deliveries but alas alpine pops went years ago it's now a company called ribble valley
we also get coffee and tea delivered too

Even if Apline was still going, we would not be able to get through all that pop. We used to get about six bottles I think it was, it was such a long time ago. I might be able to manage one bottle of dandy possibly, and a bottle of orange, to mix with vodka. Only deliveries we now get, is Amazon.

In the late 80s or early 90s, we would get a pint of orange juice along with our milk daily from the milkman. I remember one summer he also delivered small boxes of crunchie nut cornflakes!

Not uncommon to see coal being delivered around here (North Yorkshire)
I always get a kick out of seeing the two blokes who drive onto the beach at Hartlepool and spend each day raking and digging out the sea coal. There’s a vein out to sea which washes some ashore each day. It’s all small bits, but I got told that they sell it down the allotments to folk that keep a small fire smouldering to keep their greenhouse warm.

My Grandfather used to buy salvaged coal that had been dived from wrecks close to shore. He reckoned it was much cleaner burning than modern steam coal. My uncle (who now has the 6" scale traction engine) saves the cash and spends some time cleaning the boiler tubes.

Oh, I remember the orange juice that was in a milk bottle. It was really nice.
