Windows 8


Got a great spec laptop, but this pile of ***** masquerading as an operating system has wound me up far farrrrrrrrrrrrrr too often.
Put up with it for months now so i have given it ample time but it just winds me up more everyday.

managed to download a program called shell (something) that lets you use the old style start up menu, but all the other dire 'improvements' of windows 8 are so bad im considering selling my wife and children and buying a Macbook.
 
I got it on a new laptop too, Start8 is a good way to get your menus back, a lot of the other stuff you can hide. 8.1 seems to give you a wee bit more control as well but I've still not found a way to stop those ****** menu bars popping out from the right hand side every time I shift the mouse near that edge, that's about the only thing that bugs me now I've got the rest looking and acting much like 7.

I don't understand why that is happening :thinking: - I only get that menu if I put the mouse right into the top RH corner, so it hasn't caused me any major headaches (so far!).

To be honest when I (got Darrell) to build my new machine I specifically avoided 8 due to reports on here, I might treat myself to an 8.1 laptop to see how it is

Don't you turn those off where you switch on boot to desktop?

I like Win8! Got 2 lappys/netbooks running it as well as a Surface running the cut down version and a Windows phone. All touchscreen (using it with a mouse would drive me nuts!) and only using free apps. All major computing gets done on the desktop using Win7.
 
I have windows 8 on my laptop just recently done the upgrade and I spend more time using my lappy than I do my windows 7 PC and I have no problems finding my programs or anything else I love it.
 
Operating system != user interface

All of these rants seem to be about the user interface (and I admit to being no fan of the Windows 8 UI). I want to make everyone read Tanenbaum (they can skip the 12500 lines of MINIX source code at the back) :naughty:
 
No problem with windows 8 here either. Windows key to get to the tiled start screen then type in the first 2 letters of whatever I want to run. Probably quicker than getting up the start menu in 7. I like the 'apps' from the store too. easy to rearrange the tiles so the ones I use most are to hand.

Actually I think you're right. The OS itself is OK but the UI is bloody horrible UNLESS you're got a touch screen.
Strange how microshaft ever since the msdos days have alternated between pretty decent and plain awful.
 
A lot of people find it hard to learn new ways to do things, hence W8 getting such a bad press and causing so much confusion. TBH I find the interface reasonably intuitive, especially after enough reading to give me a couple of clues about the menus. But sure it won't suit everyone.
 
Windows 8 works great on both mouse and keyboard and touchscreens, that's the of the UI changes.

It's easy to live in desktop land and never see the tile interface if it bothers you that much.

Win 7 is a far better OS for a PC or Laptop in my opinion. Windows 8 was made for touchscreen and is poor in my opinion on anything else.

One thing I do like is how fast it starts :naughty:

Wrong IMO ;)

Windows 8 is quicker and easier to do stuff with than Windows 7. Windows 8.1 has made it even quicker. Going back to Windows 7 is already starting to affect me as it takes longer.

It is so easy to say 'Windows 8 was made for touchscreen and is poor in my opinion on anything else' it is a sodding catchphrase, but when you ask the people who say this how long they have used Windows 8 in its true form (no Start replacement) and they will tell you they haven't used it or they used it for a week and ran away crying.

Metro/New UI apps I still don't use a huge amount, some stuff i prefer in a browser and other stuff I am still waiting for. Some apps though I do use in the new UI. As a start menu I love it, the search has improved in Windows 8.1 which has made that easier.
 
You can also make the metro interface work for you by ditching all the social networking & weather junk and putting your key applications in there as tiles. Working like that, suddenly having the traditional desktop isn't important because you can lauch the programs you always use from a tile instead on going to a start menu.

Very much this. I don't do Farcebook or t***ter so they're binned (as far as tiles go) although I do look at the news and weather every day. I have a few sites as tiles available without swiping and a couple of others a little along the screen. As I said above, I don't use any of the Win8 machines for "serious" computing, I have the desktop for that, although I do have some office type software/apps available if I need them. Not a huge game player so those tiles are at the far end. Takes all of 1/2 a second to swipe across to them!

Well we all have our own opinions and I am sticking with mine (for now) Win 8 was made for touchscreen a blind man on a galloping horse can see that. Microsoft want everything to be uniform from tablets and phones to PC and laptops and it just does not work. I use my Win 8.1 laptop all the time and I did try it out of the box (without running away crying) but it was terrible. Yeah you get used to it but Win 7 when I first used that .... it just worked as I wanted, straight away. I have Win 8.1 but I use classic shell so really apart from the quick start which like I said before is a BIG improvement my laptop is now setup like my Win 7 laptop.... so something is not right.

When I had Win 7 I never set it up like Win Vista or XP as I never needed to.

Of course people like you will love it and others will hate it, I don't hate it but compared to Win 7 I think Win 7 was a far better OS for laptops and PC's than the current version of Win 8

Well John I fully agree with you but it could be like Marmite which I hate & others love.

I fail to see why others (like us) may have a different opinion :thinking:
