Yes
I don't why, but I walked in to Jessops and bought a battery for my old EOS 620, and a 36 exposure film. I haven't shot film in 10 years.

I've had to go on the web and find the instruction manual as I can't remember all of the controls

Not sure how they'll turn out, but I'll post up anything worth displaying.....

Steve

I have just bought a film camera, I need to get the manual out to find out how to put the film in it!

I did this last christmas. Bought a Pentax ME Super from Ffordes and made a complete b*lls up of putting the film in, despite having downloaded the manual beforehand. Ended up with a load of double exposures!

Still haven't got round to finishing the 2nd film, but will also put up some piccies when I have.

Jelster, if you have been using a DSLR for a while, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how many keepers you will now get with film.

It,s bloomin 25 years at least since I had film camera,s
But got an old Nikon F2 recently and am pleased with results,

plus the fact I can get a CD as well as prints and I,m well chuft.

I used to use an F2 professionally. Bulletproof, reliable, accurate, and best of all, easy to use.

We keep talking about getting the old Pentax SF7 out (which I bought in Oz in 1989) and doing the same with that!

Go and get some black and white for it and go out to play! :)

Highly addictive though, you can put it down for a while but then the bug bites again. Just goes to show though, don't get rid of the film camera!

Not unless it's a tidy little Olympus, then you need to let me have it! :)

Have fun. :)

I just learned the other day that my mom has an F90x. I told her to get a digital, it'll be easier on the pocket and inspire her to go out photographing more. And now the crazy thought came to me to ask for the F90x because it'll fetch a price no where near the one she paid but I'll have something to 'toy' around with :)

Everyone is doing it!! I am getting more and more tempted to stick a roll in Mr LL's old Pentax and have a play, remind myself what it's like taking a picture and not being able to check it out on an LCD screen if needs be, no histograms or anything fancy :D

I'm surprised that you were still able to buy film in Jessops...

And how tempting will it be to take a shot and then tilt the camera forward to have a peek? :D

oh, I imagine for every single shot

Its funny, normally I check the screen every so often, not every shot, but you just KNOW that because you can't, you WILL!

I did it myself yesterday with a Pentax ME Super. Doesn't help that it has a black square on the back which looks like a screen!

I was given an old Minolta X300 a while ago that a friend found it their loft. I gave it good clean up, put a roll of Velvia in and went out to shoot some landscapes. It's a totally different discipline when you realise you've got 24 shots to play with and that's it. It made me think so much more about the composition and exposure. I got the film developed, not expecting anything special but was actually quite pleased with the results. That Velvia film really does super saturate the colours and the X300 is a decent little camera :D

It's lovely shooting film. I shoot more film that digital now :)

Just steal it if you have to. ;) The F90 is a great camera - I bought one as back up body to an F4, but the AF system was so much quicker that most of the time the F4 got relegated to back up.

ok, so what film should be used and more importantly, developing, where?

Depends what you want! Fine grain B&W then XP2 (Ilford); for coarser grain (but still not too obtrusive) FP4 (Ilford) and for coarser grain, HP5 (Ilford) or Tri-X (Kodak). If you're after golfball grain, push either of the faster films (HP5 and TriX) to 1600 or beyond!

For colour prints, take your pick! Personally, I stick with Kodak or Fuji and tend to stay up in the 400 ISO area (since the film development to reduce grain for APS use, 400 ISO grain is almost as fine as 100 was back in the '80s)
For slides, Fuji's Velvia gives saturated colours (some might say oversaturated) with the Sensia range being a little more realistic.

D&P is a minefield though. I prefer to pay a bit extra and get mine done on the High St. That way, if there's a problem, I can go into the shop and get the problem sorted while with postal services, you can never speak to the person you need to! I use the lab prints as proofs- if there are any pics that deserve enlarging, I scan them, process them and print them at home.

B&W D&P used to get done at home but now would go to a local processor - XP2 can be dealt with by any C41 equipped lab (although some are ignorant and can't accept that a B&W film can be put through their soup...) while the others I mentionned need proper B&W chemistry - I'm sure there are London based people here who could tell you where to go. Ilford do mail order D&P - look at their website for info and an addy.

Slides get sent off to FujiLabs. Not the cheapest but consistently good results. They tend to all get scanned when they get back and the good 'uns printed.
