Living in the same house with two cats that share the same tastes in food. Yesterday Milo our Tabby was scoffing a few of my Black Olives, and tonight Minnie was happily eating a few morsals of my Avacado  Do any of you TP`ers have pets with odd tastes?

I have a blue staffie bitch that loves curry.

We used to have a cat who would do anything for broccoli, and another who would roll for hours in the little bit of pepper that always gets left on the table from the shaker :cuckoo:

Answering the question, fortunately none of our cats have never been the scrounging type. They'll just happily go out and get some "fast food" and then bring it in to share..

:(

Our rescue Greyhound expects a frozen oven chip whenever they are served, peas too.

Eating this late in the day, you clearly must be mad..

:p

 It was in fact around 7ish Neil. I crashed out on the sofa after, woke up again and have got to try and sleep again before getting up at 03.00 again. Sometimes I dont know if I am coming or going :(

:(

Neither of ours will scrounge Neil, just sit there patiently looking at you

blimey, makes me wonder if our cat is normal or weird...

all she will eat is

a) Iams - any flavour
b) whiskas treats.

nothing else will entice her...

how the f*** did you discover your cat likes black olives???

The 3 maine coons will eat almost anything given half a chance, as will one of the moggies, they really dont mind, meat, fish, vegetable, dairy, all is fair game... we have to watch them like hawks. On the otherhand, our latest arrival doesn't like fresh fish or tinned tuna at all, he stands there and watches the others go mad over it and just turns his nose up at it.

Our two like baked beans (cold), mushy peas, cheese and Heinz tomato soup.

One of mine loves green beans. I was harassed for jacket potato earlier by the same miscreant.

Strangest thing I've seen a cat go for is sponge cake. One I knew had to be physically restrained to keep her off it. Surprisingly strong in her dotage too.

Our cat seems to like the normal things - cat food, yoghurt, cheese (this surprised me but I'm told it is not unusual).

The only odd things that I've noticed are toast (though I think she really goes for the butter) and dried meal worms. I thought I'd try them on the birds. The birds ignored them but the cat ate them.

i have a cat and a gsd that both like lettuce :)

My GSD likes Lettuce too! And frozen peas (but she barfts the peas back)

Our Birmans when they were alive used to bread/toast. If we weren't quick enough to get it out of the toaster when it popped up, they'd be there like a shot nibbling away. I've got a picture somewhere, will have to dig it out

Our two moggies will lick our dinner plates clean given the opportunity.

Replacing the dish washer might not be on the cards now. :)

Many animals like salt even if it's mixed with something else.

one of mine has a sweet tooth.. if he gets the chance will nibble on cakes, muffins etc.. once came home to find a packet of hot cross buns scattered over the kitchen, he'd got into them for a snack, so have to hide things away now!

having a go at some blackberries here..

turn your back for a minute... by michy66, on Flickr

Our dear departed cat loved mince pies and Christmas cake. And cheese. And the meusli we had for breakfast. We had to stop buying Magnum ice creams because she used to eat more of them than we did.

forgot about cheese.. have to cut a bit up for 2 of mine when having it..

the 3rd is a fussy madam, will only eat dry cat food and crappy chicken slices.. wont eat 'proper' cooked chicken though

Ah I forgot about cheese as well. Yep, cut up into little cubes. It was their weekly treat and also our best way of giving them tablets. We'd roll the tablets into a ball of cheese. More often than not though, they'd eat the cheese and then spit out the tablet

Our cat has been known to eat small amounts of pancakes, porridge, and goes mental at the smell of fresh cut carrots. But she invariably sits next to me at meal times for her share of my fish, turkey or chicken.

Son and girlfriend have a rescued lurcher that really likes goosegrass and when out for a walk grabs it at every opportunity.

Dave

My collie x just loves tomato juice with loads of Worcester sauce - she stares at the glass, drooling and following every movement when I pick it up. I normally give in and put a drop in a bowl for her.

Our airedale loves carrots, if you open the veg bin in the fridge he's at your side his head at the bin just waiting for his favourite orange veggie, no movement if it's any other item in there we touch.

seen conflicting info on what cats can / cant eat.. cant open that link but if cheese is on it I've seen here http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_human_food_is_safe_for_cats

Many cats also like milk, certain cheeses (including cottage cheese), and butter, but dairy products like these can give cats gas and other digestive problems as many are lactose intolerant. So, if your cat likes to eat cheese, milk, and/or butter, you should only give it very small portions of these foods.

i'll copy and paste it for you.

Some of these are blantantly obvious, others not so. Many are not dangerous as such, but can cause various problems. If i can find a better and more accurate list i'll post it up.

Alcohol:
I would like to hope that nobody would actually try giving a cat alcohol. Alcohol can cause intoxication, gastrointestinal irritation, respiratory distress, coma & death.

Apricot, cherry, peach pits, almond nuts, apple seeds:
All of the above contain cyanogenic glycosides which will result in cyanide poisoning. This interferes with the ability of the blood to release oxygen into the tissues, so the cat effectively suffocates while it's blood is full of oxygen.

Avocado:
Avocado contains a toxin known as persin. It is found in all parts of the avocado & is toxic to most domestic animals.
The symptoms include gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart and even death.

Citrus:
May cause vomiting in cats.

Cooked bones:
Cooked bones can splinter & cause an obstruction, therefore they should be avoided.

Chocolate, Coffee & Tea
Chocolate contains naturally occurring methylxanthines caffeine & theobromine. The concentration of theobromine is much higher than that of caffeine, but both cause toxicity in cats (and dogs). These chemicals act as a diuretic, causing the body to lose fluids, act as a cardiac stimulant, causing it to race & is also a central nervous system stimulant.
All types of chocolate should be avoided, including dark, milk, white & cocoa powders.

Grapes & raisins:
These have been known to cause kidney damage. The active ingredient hasn't been identified.

Macadamia nuts:
Macadamia nuts have been known to cause tremors & muscle weakness in dogs, therefore it's best to apply caution & avoid giving them to cats.

Milk:
While this won't kill your cat, some cats are lactose intolerant & drinking cow's milk will cause a tummy upset.
Weaned cats no longer need to drink milk, however if you do want to give your cat some milk as an occasional treat them the best solution is to buy some cat milk from your supermarket.

Mushrooms:
There are many types of mushrooms which are poisonous. While dogs are far more likely to eat mushrooms than cats, it is advised you avoid giving your cats any type of mushrooms to be on the safe side.

Fat:
While fat isn't toxic to cats per se, it's not healthy to routinely feed your cat a diet high in animal fats as it will lead to obesity. Large amounts of fat can also cause pancreatitis.

Liver:
Small amounts of liver are fine to eat, but if fed too often it can result in Vitamin A toxicosis.

Onion & Garlic:
Onions contain sulfoxides and disulfides which damage red blood cells & can cause haemolytic anaemia.
Be careful when feeding your cat human foods, some people will recommend baby food for a cat who's lost it's appetite. This is fine, but make sure the food doesn't contain any onion, flakes, powder etc.
Onion causes greater problems than garlic.

Potato (green parts & eyes):
These contain solanine glycosides which can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea, nervous system stimulation, depression, trembling, paralysis & cardiac arrest.

Salt:
Large quantities of salt can lead to an electrolyte imbalance.

Tomato:
See potatoes.

Tuna:
This is another food which is fine to feed as an occasional treat, but musn't be fed regularly, as it can lead to a condition known as Steatitis or Yellow Fat Disease.

Yeast dough:
This can expand in the stomach causing bloating & discomfort.

Other foods which your cat shouldn't eat:

Soy & Rice Bran
Raisins
Rhubarb
Spoiled or mouldy food. If it's gone off, don't give it to your cat.
Hops

It is always a good idea to check with your vet before giving your cat food which is meant for human consumption, just to be on the safe side.

uncooked pork can also cause pseudo-rabies ( Suid herpesvirus or Aujeszky's disease ) in both cats and dogs - it's uniformly fatal (usually with 48 hours) and there is no cure
