I bought a flash gun in Jessops...

mainly because it was only 30 quid...

but I have absolutely no idea when / where and why I should use it?

Are there any basic tips on when these should be used instead of the standard camera flash and how it should be used?

^^ as said above, im guessing its the 300afd one which is quite a good flash for the money but i would do any diffusion techniques because there wouldn't be sufficient power output to light the subject.

No idea how to use it meaningfully though, so any tips would be appreciated.

One of the best pieces I've seen explaining flashes in simple terms. http://home.comcast.net/~dougsmit/bounceflashtoys.html Main use is to not get harsh shadows.

definitely worth getting, i have one for off camera flash work and its brilliant. optical slave, GN 36, decent build, i would highly recommend one.

Using either whats called a TTL Cord or by using Wireless Flash triggers such as Flash in the pan sells on here.
