having been virtually forced into using lightroom c.c ,i totally hate the way it stores my photos ,been fine for a few months everything in order by date ,place, type etc ,its now decided to play games and won't separate sept and octobers pics ,6 days into oct and its in a jumble already grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

i used to love apeture3 and i could find anything within minutes on there

No one has forced you into using lightroom. You made that choice yourself if you don't like it use something else.

It is usually quite straightforward

you can still buy the stand alone version if you are not happy with the subscription model ....... I think that the stand alone version maybe faster?

I find that I now hardly ever use PS as LR does everything almost a normal photography needs

now sorted thanks ,i was putting sub-folders in the wrong place ,thank god for live at home grown up kids :jimlad:

once you sit down with it and formulate a plan the catalogue system works really well in my book. at first i had pics all over the place, but after a couple of youtube videos and a clean slate i was up and running with a beautifully organised workflow. try it again.

And keywording is a major plus IMO.

Light room does not care where you store your files as long as you do not move them.... It is only a library system.

And this is why I don't use LR..................

Me too, tried it several times just cannot get on with it. I stick with Bridge / ACR /PS.

LR will only do what you ask of it. in this case it sounds like the OP had not set their folders correctly which LR will reference directly.

well you can, you just have to relink the folder after moving it.

Or if memory serves me, move within the LR GUI then it knows what "you" have done.

Have you thought about still using aperture for your libuary management and then do your edits in Lightroom.. It is the way I will go when I have too..

Sounds like operator error when downloading files.

OH! It WAS operator error after all...

The Lightroom catalog reflects the file layout on your hard drive - it doesn't create one of it's own.
If you cannot organise your basic file structure you can't blame it on LR.

I too disliked (hated is too strong a word) Lightroom when I first started using it.
I then made the effort to learn how it works and since then I've not looked back.

Of course, I just get too confused with setting up the folders although its probably a simple process once you learn how. Not keen on the GUI either and it doesn't offer the LAB color mode which is what I tend to edit in before sending to PS for final edits and conversion.

I prefer photos for photo storage and organisation.takes a few SEC's to find what I need.i edit elsewhere then bring into photos.u less your a pro can't see what I'm missing though I'm sure someone will tell me lol

just set up your folder structure up the way you want it from the get go and you'll have no issues.
I have a mix of folder structures from previous software. so I have just dumped the lot in a single location called my photographs.
I make no attempt to create a structure.
Light room find them perfectly easily, by date or what ever I have named them in light room, or by sets or subject.

even the thought of that makes me feel uneasy.

It doesn't bother lightroom in the least, it is just a relational database.
It never uses your structures anyway.

Yes, I use DXO Optics Pro, as well as Lightroom.
Overall, I find the standard RAW editing features do give a better image than Lightroom.
It seems to be vapable of pulling more fine detail from the RAW file but I guess some people may not like the 'look'.
However, it has none of the cataloging anf image management that Lightroom does, at least I haven't found it if it does!
Tou can however use Lightroom to manage and sort phots and then send to Optics Pro for editin, but it's a bit of a compromise.
It also doesn't seem to have as many presets available if you like that, which reduces the usage for me as I like my VSCO presets :)

I think you can download a trial version of Optics Pro as well, so maybe just give it a try.

Personally I have no problems with LR. I use it as my library and in most cases it is fine for all my editing needs.

Likewise.

If I want a bit more editing capacity in Lightroom I use a plug-in like Topaz or NIK.
Sometimes I want to do some more elaborate cloning or create a composite, those are the only times I need to resort to Photoshop.

If you're not using Lightroom for developing you might be better served by using a dedicated image management program like iMatch or IDImager (now called "PhotoSupreme")
