Oh LB - what a pain. 
There doesn't seem any easy answer, except smothering both fences in beautiful climbing plants, preferably with large thorns to keep your neighbours at bay.
imo what you do (or don't do) depends on how much of a war you want with them. Personally, I'd hate a major dispute with my neighbours (and we've got 6 houses sharing our boundaries - in a very tiny garden).
I think I'd try and ignore their fence and them as much as possible and enjoy the nice things in life.

I'm not letting it get me down, I have politely said that I am not happy and that I would have done mine differently had they only asked or talked to me! I'm not planning on a war, especially as i know that I've not got to paint mine now and they have to paint theirs.. AND THEY CAN'T GET TO IT !!!!!

Im not an expert like sawman, but when you said that yours are PRE-TREATED, Ladybird, I'm hoping that's the same as PRESSURE TREATED that sawman said?
It sounds to me that your neighbours got the hump that you wanted to put a fence up in the first place and have done theirs as a "finger up to you" kind of thing. Buggers.

Just found this thread, sorry to hear about that LB, bloody annoying! Sounds like your neighbours are plain bloodyminded seeing as they have done this knowing what you were planning and not saying a word. Sometimes, Leylandii hedges have their uses

Issue is resolved, They were very unhappy that I was upset and we have talked it through, they are going to sort things out my side so I am happy too!

Have been very fortunate for some time now to have had lovely neighbors especially where we live. There was a time though, many years ago when I lived in a nice terraced house, but the neighbors had a dog that literally wouldn't stop barking every time they went out of the house. He barked constantly while they were out; at work, for dinner, literally anytime. It was awful, really awful. Despite many conversations with the neighbors they did nothing about it and were somewhat apathetic, until I finally sorted it. And boy did I sort it...
PS: I didn't (and wouldn't) hurt the dog.

I suppose one alternative could be to dig a hole under their fence and invite all the local cats to leave 'calling cards' in their garden!!

Well, after we had suffered for almost 2 years, I decided enough was enough.
I simply recorded their dog when he was in full voice, barking away (I had good quality recording gear), and made sure I recorded him for at least an hour (used both sides of a C60 tape - remember those!!). He was again in very good form, incessant barking all the time, with only minimal gaps.
This was before our kids were born by the way it was that long ago.
On a day when my wife and I had planned to go out for the afternoon and evening, and when I knew the neighbors were in at home, I simply set up my hi-fi speakers against the wall, I mean right up physically against the wall, turned the volume up, and pressed play on the tape. The tape deck I owned had a repeat/turn around option on the cassette player, and we went out for the afternoon and evening; arriving back sometime after midnight and so the barking was played back to them for over 10 hours in total.
The following day they came around to see me - quite irate about it too (cheeky devils) - and in return I threatened to (1) send in a copy of the tape to the environmental health department, and (2) play it every time we went out, until they did something about their dog.
Subsequently when they went out, they either asked one or both of their parents to come over (which stopped the dog barking), or they took the dog to their parents house.

glad yours is solved ladylens, the neighbourly dispute at my parents will run and run though
its a row of terraced houses with a vehicle access round one end and a walking access the other, rights of usage allows access over everyones land around the back, the bloke that moved in at the walking access end decided that he was going to close off the walking access (no one really uses it apart from the lady next door with a pushchair (he made the access over his land so thin that you couldnt pass with a buggy) with a locked gate, which he is not allowed to do, this was discussed with him but he continued to be an assclown, but after a legal letter he had to remove the lock allowing us access over his land, my dad walked through this gate one day and didnt quite close it, the blokes response was to follow him down the road, attempt to grab him round the throat and threaten to hit him with a spade (this was reported to the police but no action was taken). he also had a go at me (seriously rude) whilst i was unloading some heavy bags from my car parked on the access (we are entitled to do this) he was very rude so i informed him that once he learned some manners i would move my car, please and thank you cost nothing to use. i then removed my car, and he threatened me (I laughed in his face and walkd off). hes also threatened the next door neighbour (not sure why any weasily little git would attempt a fist fight with a 6ft5 rugby player.....).
my mother has also had a go at him for driving like a ****ing idiot over our property when there are kids playing, he tried to be mouthy back at her UNTIL he realised i was stood right behind her, then he backed down!
unfortunately there is nothing we can really do (unless he actually hits anyone) he has access over our property and we cant permenantly impede him, we came up with a rather humerous solution which involved 5 sets of gates on remote controls which would not remain open for longer than 1 minute, it would take him about 10mins to negotiate the rear access road yet everyone else would be able to come and go as they please, we havent yet to implement this as it would be very expensive.
i dont understand people that try to upset or anger there neighbours as it only impedes them, this neighbour would legally have to declare this "neighbourly dispute" if he were to sell his house (which he is, its been on the market for a year and a half now....) whereas my parents and neighbours have no intention of moving in the forceeable future. hes just making it dificult for himself!
