What do you do when:
you spend £400 on a lovely new 4'6" fence, the whole length of the garden, consulting the neighbours all the way to make sure they are happy and then within a week your neighbour puts a six footer right next to it? looks really awful this side and I am right peeeeed off!

Any ideas or hugs welcome while i sit and cry! :(
 
That is poor of your neighbour LB especially as you had involved them. :(

Not a lot you can do really apart from pray for high winds :lol:

Failing that you could always plant some of those annoying tree's?:D
 
They apparently want privacy, Well I can still see into their garden from upstairs! :lol: and my dad has suggested getting a trampoline! PMSL at that one!

I have only lived here a few months, I have removed a jungle from that side of the garden(they moaned that nothing would grow their side etc etc) all I have done to be a good neighbour and now this! :shrug:
 
Isn't 6' too high? Don't they need planning permission for that?

No, unfortunately. they don't.

He said they were going to put up trellis on some posts their side, to raise fence by about a foot, like is already is at the bottom of their garden. (that I would have been OK with even though I didn't want it) and what they have put up is much bigger. I hate it. and as it is in their garden there is nothing i can do
 
Damm shame LB, difficult one when all you are trying to do is be a good neighbour, as you say if it is on their side of the boundry not an awful lot you can do.:shrug:

I know where we are you cannot go higher than 6 ft without planning permission and that includes trellis, difficult call though

I agree with your Dad, get a trampoline and add a loud stereo :nuts::D

Hmmm, re the stereo, that would upset the other side as well, pity as I like that one! Maybe a party?

They want to come round at some stage and treat it with some creasote or something, any guesses what my answer might be........... :bat: :D
 
In all seriousness, I heartily advise having a chat with them, and express your concern that A : You think its horrible and B : they didnt have the courtesy to check with you as you did with them.

These things have a nasty habit of getting out of hand.

Failing that, use the options above :D

Paint your side of it bright yellow, make sure the paint oozes down their side too :D

I'm assuming it's a wooden interwoven or lap fence -

Plant some Ivy along it's length.
You'll eventually have an Ivy hedge that you can access for clipping etc etc.
Ivy is a good host for all kinds of wildlife - insects - nesting sites etc etc.

Ivy will penetrate every crevice and gap it can find. The view from your neighbours side will be awful, with bits poking out everywhere.
Your neighbours fence will make a lovely support for your Ivy hedge.
Creosote it ?? In five years time they won't be able to see it.
 
Sorry to hear about the situation LB.
Not very nice of them to let you pay for the fencing and then do this.
KeithH is right though, get some Clematis & Ivy on the go, and you'll soon have your own little wildlife haven.

Tbh, I love my 6ft fence and even higher hedges... I wouldnt have it any other way... and just think of all that topless sunbathing you'll get in! ;)

I went out as soon as i came home from the garden centre! I have expressed in a polite manner that I did keep them informed and asked them if they were happy every step of the way. (Even to the point of making sure none of their plants had been damaged! ) and I have expressed concerns

1-that it is so close to mine that how am i going to get behind it to treat it?

2-why didn't they say thats what they wanted and I would have had a higher fence my side so I didnt have this.

3-that what they are doing now is now what they originaly said they were going to do

and

4-that I am really not happy.


I have the guy that did my fence coming back on Fridat to see if anthing can be done to improve things.

What really gets me though, Is that legally I only have to put up a chain link fence. I should have done that and let them pay for the rest! Would have saved me a fortune!!!!!!!!!

A few questions first,
What type of fencing has been erected on both sides, panel fence, post,rail, and planked?.
Was the fence you put up a replacement boundary fence sitting exactly on the boundary?,
Have the neighbours just nailed their fence to yours or is it post rail and vertical planks placing their fence well inside the boundary on their side?
 
Seriously LB, I know it sounds like Im making light of it but I do feel for you. :hug:
At my last house my neighbours were horrendous and the fencing between us was 4' 6", I found I rarely ever stepped into my concrete jungle garden, while they enjoyed bbq's and fixing cars etc all summer long.

Here, my neighbours are wonderful on both sides, if anything a little 'over-friendly' and as we all enjoy gardening/wildlife I value my privacy in the summer when we're all out enjoying our gardens.
 
In my last three houses I had disputes with my neighbours over fencing:annoyed: one of the reasons I moved to the countryside with no neighbours, just sheep and wildlife:D

I have mentioned this to them, and told him how much the fence cost me! I even paid for all the work, Unlike them I have a bad back and cant do heavy work

I have had a really good quality fance built, new posts, then rails and individual planks built onto that, EXACTLY on the same boundary.

They have put in their own posts, and panels, about 4inches gap between the two fences,

Now that is just mad, why the heck they didn't ask you in the first place then you could of put up something that suited you both, bloomin neighbours:bat:

if I was in your positon I'd pull down my fence and thank him very much for the 4" of land he has given me. :)

I'd then re-use the materials from my fence elsewhere ;)


dont get annoyed with it, life's too short.

If its privacy they want, they got it! And now so have I :D

AND..... I no longer have to look at their naff garden!
 
Thats what I was going to say take yours down which would have been on the boundry
They have lost upto a foot off their garden by errecting a fence behind yours.
I think that it it remains "as is" for 10 years that peice of land is yours.
Thats what I would do certainly I know you have lost £400 but that foot of land must be worth at least that :D

Might I suggest paying a local chav a fiver to burn their fence down :naughty:

Unfortunately, the gap is only 3 to 4 inches, which is why I have concerns on how the *** I am going to kep mine treated, But, yes a good idea! Unlikely I will be here in 10 years though!

Which is why i have just consulted them for the last few weeks on getting a new fence up! :bonk: :bang:

Just the two of us here and our 2 lovely little Cavalier King Charles spaniels, (the one in the avatar is mine) enjoying all the space so no room for anyone else, besides my wife wouldn't agree:D

Mind you when I did move here the farmer behind me conned me into replacing the boundary fence on my garden only to learn a long time later that the rule is the farmer must fence his livestock in the field rather than me fencing his livestock out of my garden:nono:.

In my previous house I had properties bordering one side of my garden, yes it was a big garden as I was one of the first to choose a plot on the estate, anyway not one of them would agree to contribute to the material cost of the fence so I was forced to put up my fence against the existing ranch style fence (which I insisted they did not remove!) and "lose" the use of part of my land.
Not long after the erection of the fence the three neighbours started making use of their side of MY fence, well I was not going to have any of that as they did not contribute so I told them to remove all climbing plants, plant pots, bird feeders, washing lines etc and that was when they threw their toys out of the pram and we never spoke again:D.
I have since been in that area and have noticed the ranch style fence is now down, my fence is still there so in effect they have stolen about 6ins of land from the present owners.

I think I would still do it then refuse them access to "treat" their fence Just because I can :D
 
Ladybird. If your fence was erected with pressure treated timber then you can forget about retreating it for at least 20years. If it isnt then.......
You should have bought your fencing from me.:lol: Just kidding you.
As to your neighbours fence. I have a good sharp chainsaw & am willing to hire my services for a large fee!:lol:

I supplied my neighbour with fencing for a five foot high fence between him & HIS neighbour. He "forgot" to pay me. Now I am putting up a six foot one between him & me. He hasnt offered to share the cost or the work.
