I knew my trousers were all getting a bit tight. When I weighed myself I find I have a BMI of 31.8 - that's officially obese. I can't believe it!

I thought if I announce it to the world it would motivate me to stop stuffing my mouth and get on with some serious weight loss. Feel free to throw any insults you wish. "Lardy Bloater" comes to mind.

Who ate all the pies...
You've made me feel incredibly slim at BMI of 26.7, not that I can see it means a lot at all, I'm sure a lot of people with higher BMI's than me are a lot fitter.

BMI of 20 here (for what that measurement is worth).

Eat less, move more ya lazy git :D

I know for guys who do body building, BMI is not really relevant, but for weeds like me a BMI of 31.8 is seriously unhealthy.

The more insults the better. I need motivating here!

Buy the "hairy dieters" book. Eat their food and count your calories honestly. The weight will gradually fall off. You don't need diet fads or special shakes or to live on lettuce.

15 months ago, I was diagnosed as type II diabetic (wrongly as it turns out but that's another story!) so I made a fairly drastic alteration to lifestyle and diet. Since then, I've dropped 4 stone (and put one back on since the diabetes diagnosis was revoked) by eating more sensibly less stupidly, i.e. cutting right back on sugar and fat. For the past 11 months, I've also been taking much more exercise too. My GP isn't worried about my BMI, although he says it's probably a bit high. He also commented that if I dropped to the weight I should be according to his chart, he would be tempted to say I was anorexic!
I'm still trying to be less silly with food but do now treat myself every now and again (rather than my old style of now and again and again and again etc!!!) I would like to get down to 15 stone but I also enjoy food so it could take a while.

IIRC even the guy who invented BMI said it wasn't to be used for individuals (it's a measure for populations) but on the other hand, obese basically means you have a reduced life expectancy due to weight.

You need to start burning more calories than you eat ;)

I could have told you that :D My doctor once said I needed to get in shape. I said I am, it just so happens this weeks shape is a sack of spuds.

Do you drink a lot of sugary drinks? I found a while ago that when I stopped drinking them then I started to lose weight.

My cholesterol level was dangerously high start of this year. I was having trouble breathing, a long walk was seriously hard work, I was way over-weight and showing it!

I kicked the cig's, startedeating a few more salads in place of th mounds of cheese and fried foods I was scoffing - still not healthy, but on the way, working on it. My cholesterol has dropped significantly and my breathing is much, much better.

Best of luck with it!

... fatty :P

You fatty bombatty!

I need to lose some weight, my BMI is around 26, so not awful, but I've been doing very little exercise (although I do walk a lot) drinking too much alcohol and eating the wrong things for too long, and it's caught up with me. I'm lacking a bit in motivation at the moment, but over the past few weeks I have made a fairly weak effort to count calories, and I've actually managed to drop a couple of pounds (somehow) although I'm sure it's more coincidence than anything.

Another one here with a touch of middle age spread, lucky i have a dog to walk or i dread to think what shape i'd be in.

The BMI could be improved if it factored in waist measurement. That and that alone would turn this to a more useful tool. Having said that, whilst I know athletes and bodybuilders will throw it off, the majority of people who are overweight/obese/morbidly obese are nowhere near anything resembling athletic.

I've lost about 1st in weight through the 5:2 intermittent fasting. TBH the way it helped was that I've reduced my overall intake. Typical day would be breakfast/lunch/dinner and then crisps/biscuits/choccies in the evening because I'd feel hungry. Making me fast helped reduce the size of the stomach so I'd feel full more quickly and on smaller amounts of food. Where I was eating ~ 2000-3000kcals/day, I'm now eating 1200-1500kcals/day.

Myfitnesspal smartphone app (or website) have helped track calories.

I used to snack unhealthily but now tend to grab a baby carrot or a raw runner bean rather than a choccy bar or big bag of Minstrels. These days, I can have an open bag of Minstrels in the car and have just one or 2 on a journey - I seem to have learned how to moderate myself! I might even be growing up, something I've managed to avoid for 50years!!!

if i seem to recall, most of the england rugby squad are technically obese! You tell them that!

Only over the phone and mine seems to be on low battery - can I use yours to do so?

(I have actually called a few England players "Fat *****" but that was at school and they were England Schools players, although one did represent the "real" England team a couple of times.)

I can't remember how to calculate BMI but I'm one of those lucky folk who stay pretty much the same.

I'm 5'11" / 12.5 stone / 32" waist / 42 years old / not bad figure.

I'm not fit though. I used to be but I've gone downhill over the last few years.

If I was piling on the pounds I think I'd be straight on a diet and upping my exercise but it's hard to motivate myself to do it when the decline is fitness related.

Your BMI is about spot on.... I'm 5'11" too and IIRC 12st 12lb is a BMI of 25 which it the upper end of "OK"......... I'm just over 15st

as said before bmi is [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]....

Ok I know I need to lose a couple of stone, but bmi does not take into account lots of swimming and rugby in a previous life, so petty much "top heavy".. 48 " shirt to a 38 " waist.. i believe the "normal" is a 6" difference..

I think BMI just tells you whether you should try and get taller or shorter.

have you considered that you are too short for your weight?

Phil based on the stats you gave your BMI is 24.4

Less than 18.5 = underweight

18.5 - 24.9 = healthy weight

25 - 29.9 = overweight

30 or greater = very overweight or obese

And as for me......

I have all the pies! :D

BMI is useless.. I'm heavily obese.

6ft, 16 stone and I'm as strong as an ox. I have a slight double chin, but I'm most defo not fat!! (I enjoy lifting weights lol).

After doing a bit of reading around it seems that for a quick and simple measure of healthy weight waist meaurement is better than BMI.

From NHS website

Waist size and risk of health problems

You have a higher risk of health problems if your waist size is:

more than 94cm (37 inches), if you're a man
more than 80cm (31.5 inches), if you're a woman

Your risk of health problems is even higher if your waist size is:

more than 102cm (40 inches), if you're a man
more than 88cm (34.5 inches), if you're a woman

Unfortunately, I still come out as a Lardy Bloater with a waist of 40"

im "technically" underweight, but have always had a slender figure, my mum is exactly the same. its just genetic in my case. i have no plans to up my food intake what so ever.

Although my mum was put on diets to gain weight when she was younger, think of the guiness and mars bar diet, one of each every day. also the bread pudding diet one slice a day. All pointless in mine and my mums cases if you ask me.

LOL

I'm just in the right bit then.

That said if I'm 24.5 I'm amazed 25 is considered overweight.

Agree it's more accurate. IIRC the other calculation that was useful was the waist-to-hip ratio (basically if your waist is larger than your hips, you're in trouble).

In the same way that a simple BMI calculation is, IMO, inadequate because it tends to the average, I am concerned that comments which link one physical measurement (ie waist size) to the risk of health problems (whatever that means) is also of little use.

The answer to being healthy (in contrast to losing weight) is simple -
eat good food, avoid too much fat, don't smoke, don't drink too much alcohol and do some exercise.

BTW the BBC 2 series “The Men Who Made Us Thin” presented by Jacques Peretti (first 2 of 4 already shown) makes interesting watching.

That's proving fascinating!

I'd be interested to know whether the 5/2 system does actually show long lasting results as it fits kind of with the feast/famine which humans are built for.

The quick fitness system of doing hard exercise for 3 x 30 seconds a couple of times a week in Dr wotsit's horizon has also turned things on their head.

Is that having two fasting days a week with very low (circa 500) calorie intake?

If so, my employer has been doing it and has got his weight down. The reduction is very gradual, a pound or so a week.
