It really has opened my eyes.. I am not slagging facebook or social media off.. I think they are great and have made the world a lot smaller... I really do think it's the best thing to happen

But

I am astounded at how gullible people are.. OK we all know there are idiots, fools and slow people about.. But I didn't realise there where so many.. including friends and family..

Upload a picture of a famous person and add whatever text you want to the pic.... nearly everyone then believes that person said it... Tell them someone is hacking accounts and can wipe your hardrive and they believe it... tell them facebook are giving away hundreds of thousands of shares and they believe it.... Oh and.... if you like a poorly boys picture a million times then he will get life saving surgery ...... Change your avatar and your helping beat cancer.... talk to dead people.... the list goes on.....

Its not social medias fault.. its nobodys fault.. I am just saying it's opened me eyes to how many gullible people there are... a lot more than i thought...

For me TP is the nearest thing to social media that I use 'online'.

My social media consists of

1. A fountain pen
2. 100g Laid Vellum Paper
3. Matching Envelopes
4. Postage stamps

Not instant, very personal, structured, enjoyed by the recipient. Additionally, none of my sentences start with the crass "so I......".

I was in hospital very recently and was unable to write but I did receive emails and texts via my phone, which I struggled to read. The staff were amazed when, over the course of 3 days, I received 5 handwritten letters. The general response was "Gosh, I thought that was a thing of the past"

I have written to penfriends since I was 5 years old, some 56 years now. This includes the children of many of my original contacts who have passed on themselves.

I love the digital world but some things are worth keeping. Ink and paper sits there right beside the 2 rolls of FP4 I need to send away for developing and scanning to CD.

I also get to drive my bank, LA and a few others barmy by writing in longhand. [emoji41]

That realisation is where the money grabbing scams come from, and why many are so successful

Agree, Kipax. To a certain extent it has always happened - when the main(perhaps only) source of information was newspapers I'm sure some believed everything the papers said. Though I agree some folks now seem more accepting of any old garbage.

The belief in some (eg pass it on or someone will die/not get better) is really quite worrying, others are just people not being critical enough.

pass it on or someone will die/not get better

We used to get a lot of this sort of thing where I used to work, usually telling people to pass it on to 10 other people. Unfortunately, one idiot got lazy and just selected the first 10 in the contacts list, one of which was "-All-" which included, of course, the chairman & CEO!

I can appreciate this. One of the reason why I only tend to log on once a month or so, the rest is twaddle that annoys me - surely people were never tbis "thick" !?

Social engineering.

I was watching something the other day (Dave Groman's America Unchained - I love it). Anyway, as part of his journey, he visits Dog Bark Park, and the owner talks about how has society come to accept that a burger in NYC tastes the same as a burger in LA (referring to Macdonalds), or a hotel in one place is identical to another of it's chains the other side of the country (ie, TV in the middle of a room, and a picture offset to the right and mirror to the left etc)....

It is sad that we have become this way, but I also understand why it has happened.

You can see why so many fall for scams.

My Nan uses Facebook.....in one way its great she can reconnect with long lost friends but the other side is that she literally shares anything without checking its validity first.
