......I was listening to the radio today and it was all about the intergration of other Europeans in the UK, how they have settled down and would they consider getting a British Passport.

One of the things that was discussed was the amount of Child Benefit that was being paid out to children that live in other countries but one parent is based here......

£55 MILLION per year......WTF :eek:



Sorry if this sounds political it is not intended to be.....it is a fact which I can not comprehend....:thinking:
 
Shouldn't be allowed and don't see how it can be allowed to be claimed to be honest. It's wrong on so many levels.

Wrong is an understatement......The Uk is only one of 4 countries in the EU that do this
 
Child benefit is wrong, full stop.
It should be fairly means tested and limited to the first 2 children, if you want more you should make sure you
can afford to care for them.
 
while I don't agree with Ingrid about it stopping at 2 children (maybe reduce it after the 2nd) I don't think it should be paid to non-resident children. But in the grand scheme of things £55m isn't that much money (when you're talking governments that is), which isn't to say we shouldn't stop it, but I'd rather we looked at other bigger wastes of money first. Who are the other 3 countries?
 
Wasn't there a move awhile back to means test it anyway?
Did it fail or wasn't it implemented?

I think they mentioned France, Germany and Italy. The UK pays for over 40000 Kids from the European Union in Child Benefit

You could argue that paying uk tax & ni also entitles you to uk benefits.

I'm not completely sure that it's reasonable to expect that a tax payer could leave a country and contribute elsewhere but expect the country of origin to continue to pay benefits for that person....
 
It's not just child benefit - a friend is moving to Sweden and told me she's eligible to claim JSA from the UK government whilst she's out there.
 
Isn't child support not given to UK parents to help the upbringing of their child?

Even if the child is not in the UK isnt the parent still likely to be contributing financially towards their child?

Genuine question.
 
in a world going increasingly insane by the day ,nothing surprises me .i sometimes wonder looking at the news if the mayans were not after all right about 2012 but it just marked the start of the end .it sure looks like it to me

Most likely. If the parent/parents qualify for child support allowance then it doesn't really matter where the child lives.

The controversy is that an individual from another country can walk into the UK and claim for! Amount if children in said other European county.....and they don't even have to be employed....they only need to register for a national insurance number......and off to three social to see what other benefits they can scam from the gullible British population.......it is [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] ridiculous..... a UK citizen could not go to a country and claim for their children back in the UK......

Doesn't matter if it not as easy as registering for a NI number it still happens.......and yes there are bigger wastes of money in this country but set aside paying our taxes to child benefit for those who live in another country is just wrong.......the more I look at this and then my last year's tax and NI bill just makes me boil.......

This is not about the UK citizen..... it is about a citizen from the European union travelling to the UK and leaving his children in their country of origin.....then going to the social or whatever department that deals with child benefit and claiming for the for their children back in whatever country they came from......


And I read the Times:D

Not Jeremy but it is widely available online from various sources as well as the .gov.UK helpline for migrants

Just because UK citizens are financially responsible for the child, that still doesn't mean it's ethically right. Child benefit for UK residing children gets spent in this country and goes back into the UK economy, not that of another country.

If they're working (which seems to be one of the conditions of being able to claim CB) then the citizen will be paying their own way on NI contributions anyway.

Total non story IMO.

You do not have to be working.....all you need is a passport from a Euro country, proof of your kid identity and a NI number.....TOTAL STORY if you are a UK tax payer and having your government pay for non UK citizens

That's not what the link posted above says. There are a few other scenarios but it seems you must be paying UK tax and NI to get it

What is the difference between someone expecting the state to sponsor them having more children, and the state giving me money so that I can buy a Ferrari/bigger house etc.
Having children is a lifestyle choice - if you cannot afford them, then don't expect other people to help pay for them.
 
Having or not having children is an economic choice as well as a lifestyle choice. If people stop having children there will be noone earning towards paying pensions, etc.

And there are historic reasons why child benefit is viewed as politically untouchable. It hasn't traditionally been viewed as a benefit, more of a state mediated transfer of a basic minimum sum of cash from a husband's pay packet to that of the primrary childraiser, the mother. And this goes back to the days of the literal pay packet, cash in an envelope on a Friday. Child benefit was claimed directly by the mother and collected from the post office, and therefore couldn't be pi$$ed up against a pub wall on a Friday night. It's also seen as a progressive benefit, going a very small way towards mitigating the effects of gender pay imbalance.

You might argue that some of the circumstances have changed, but whilst there are people that remember what child benefit was they'll continue to defend it.

Not quite, they would need to either be contributing to NI or have done so previously (to be able to claim contribution-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, state pension etc).
Sounds like a bit of sensationalist journalism on the radio with no real story once you look a little deeper at the actual facts.

Just another case of 'soft touch' Britain, being exploited.

I'll stop there, as I can feel the anger starting to 'kick in'.
